Engine compatibility?

Hello, this is my first post on here. I’m just wondering if there are other engines compatible with mighty max’s. I have a 89 manual transmission and the ball bearing in the engine just blew up so I’m wondering if I could put something more powerful in it anyways since I have to swap it out regardless. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to mightyram. First up - what engine is currently in there? There are only 2 options for a regular gas engine - G63B 2.0 SOHC or 4G54 2.6 SOHC. The G63B is easily identified as it has a plastic timing cover (belt driven engine) while the 4G54 has an alloy timing cover. I'm guess when you posted 'ball bearing' you meant bottom end or rod bearing. Ouch. The options are kind of limited. You can swap the G63B for a 4G63 twin cam/twin cam turbo engine (been done plenty of times on different platforms and forums) or the 4G54 can be swapped for another 4G54 from a Conquest/Starquest/Starion which will give you turbo as well, or swap to a 4G64 which is the 2.4 from later trucks. None of these are a nut and bolt swap and require harness swaps and some fabrication to get them to work. If you want engine options look at Mitsubishi vans for donor vehicles and early Hyundai's. Truck engine bays are big enough to handle something out of the family like a small block V8. Check out members rides and builds if you need inspiration for a project.

No such thing as ball bearing in a motor. A main or rod bearing would be the likely culprit.

S&J Engines ahs a rebuilt with warranty for the 2.6 - I got one from them in my Mighty Max I'm selling - they do a great job on their engines. About 9k miles on this one thus far.

Ca everyone just stop. Like, really. It was obvious what the OP was intending and even a block of wood like me could figure it out. To the OP ligee - have you determined the level of damage the failed bearing has caused? It might only be minor and requiring new bearings and a linish up on the crank journals. Keep us posted

Idk I was going pretty fast when the bearing spun i hope it didn’t crack nothing, I haven’t had time to look around very much but I’ll see what I can find

G63B opens up options. Same block as the twin cam 4G63 1G engines (6 bolt crank same as the SOHC bottom end) Member 3ddi3 is in the process of building a 4G64 twin cam truck which uses the same head but on a 2.4 block. Check his build here He hasn't got to the head install yet but it seems like he is on it.
