I have a June 92 Mighty Max with the 2.4.
What are some ways I can difinitively tell if I have a 6 or 7 bolt wideblock or narrow block without taking the engine apart? I would use this chart:

But the problem is that my truck was built during the time period that they switched from the 6 to the 7.
Measure the block. I am 80% sure all the rwd mitsu's were wideblock. As for the crank, youll have to look at your flywheel.
if it's a 2.4 it is a wideblock. if you look at the firewall and if says G64B it's a 6 bolt. if it says 4G64 it's a 7 bolt. and yes the trucks did get the narrow blocks but only in the 2.0 motors.
I went and checked, and it turns out I have a 7. Thanks for the help!
Yup your truck is a wide block, all 2.4 truck motors are. As for the 6 vs 7 iM not sure, I know with dsm 2.0s(eclipses,etc) you can tell by looking at the oil pan/block but not sure with the 4g64
yes it is the same, if the firewall says 4G64 it will have the curved front oil pan and thinner rods. i've had to do a TON of 2.4 research hear lately because i too thought that i was getting a 6 bolt and it turned out to be a 7 bolt
actually with yours being a June truck you really need to do the oil pan check

Looking at the oil pan I can for sure say that it is flat. I took it off last week to put a new gasket on it and it is definitely flat.
I AM SO CONFUSED. GAH!

man if it's flat then yes you have one of the older rarer 6 bolt 4G64's perfect for boost and a strong motor for sure

I was under the impression all '90, '91 and some '92s were wideblock 6 bolt 2.4 liter.
There are a few rarer wideblock 6 bolt 2.0s that can with automatic transmissions.
Another easy trick to quickly tell if you have a 6 or 7 bolt is to look at the Head Bolts. Open the oil cap and look in the valve cover with a flashlight. If the head bolts are Allen Key head bolts, it's a 6 Bolt block. If they are 12 point 14mm (stretch bolts) it's a 7 bolt.
WOW!! he's totally right! i have a 2.0 6 bolt motor and and 7 bolt 2.4 right next to each other and yeah i had never noticed that!! awesome info for junk yard shopping!

I am glad this thread has opened up so much. I really appreciate all the help on this one. However, even with all the help, I still have no idea as to what engine I have.
What I do know:
1. The oil pan is flat
2. The firewall says 4G64
3. Here is a pic from the inside of my valve cover. They look like regular bolts, but I can't tell.

I guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and check the flywheel so I will know once and for all. Can anyone send me to some instructions on how to get to the flywheel?

Those are the factory 1gen Allen head bolts, Congrats!! You have a 6 bolt!!

Yeah sorry, that was me. Some bad info I came across over on project zero g. The Allen/ 12 point head bolt info is golden thou!!
