Need guidance strapping a turbo on a 4G64 MM.

Hey guys. So since my last post I've decided on a direction, finished my move, and have my garage setup to do this project, but I need a little help. So I've purchased the correct turbo manifold for my factory head from a nice guy in Australia, and I'm ready to start ordering the rest of the parts to do this build. As the title indicates, I will be leaving my engine and head alone for now, and putting a turbo on it. What I am unclear on, is which parts do I need, and from what vehicles? (For example, ECM, injectors, turbo, oil pan etc). Thanks for assistance, and if you require further information, just let me know.

Are you planning on running more than 10 psi boost? You will need the injectors from a DSM to keep up with fuel demand (more than likely the ECU and wiring from one will go a long way as well). If you want some guidance on setting up a decent turbo engine check out a YT channel by jafromobile. I'll check out the YouTube, thanks. As far as what boost to run, I'm not sure what these engines can take, but I was hoping for between 10-15 PSI, but was assuming closer to the 10 side of that. Injectors, ECU, and wiring harness from a DSM. No problem, but what do you mean when you say DSM? Is there a specific car or list of cars you can give me? My experience is 100% American, this is my first import project. Thanks in advance.

DSM is the term used when referring to the US collaboration between Chrysler and Mitsubishi motors (Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse/Plymouth Laser). If you can limit your boost to 10 psi you should be able to get away with not having to alter your bottom end assembly. The best thing about Mitsubishi is the cross compatibility between engines and platforms. Setting up a turbo will be for the most part pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the clarification, is there a certain one that you suggest pulling parts from? And I would like to not pull the bottom end apart for now, so I'll stay under 10 lbs. Once I figure out the best car to pull them from, is the ECM, harness and injectors all I will need to pull?

You're going to need...everything. There are relays for the FI, the electric fuel pump and a bunch of sensors. It would probably be easier to actually use a wreck with the engine as a donor to your truck and swap it all over (as long as the gearbox is compatible). The 4G63 twin cam turbo is a tried and true combo and the amount of info on the swap is plentiful. Easy for me to say how this goes from the other side of a desktop monitor, but if you search the site you'll find some awesome builds - the threads are a good read.

a starion 2.6 turbo bolts to your manifold. Get the downpipe elbow too. You'll need to route feed and return lines
The sensor in the truck distributor can run the DSM turbo electronics.

Thanks geezer, but that's above what I'm trying to do right now. I'm looking to freshen up the truck, breathe some life into it, add a little pep for my long back road drives to work. Engine will be cleaned up, lots of new electronics (Having a ghost electrical problem that leaves me stranded, assuming ECU at this point), a simple turbo added along with supporting mods which is what I'm trying to figure out here. Other than that, the entire truck is coming off the frame. Cleaning all the surface rust off the frame, giving it a good inspection, will likely spray on some cor-ban or something similar (I'm a jumbo jet mechanic, that's what we use to moisture seal and prevent corrosion). Suspension modification, I want to run coil overs all the way around, I want it tight and low (Not slammed). New bushing on everything. Will empty, clean, and inspect the gas tank at this point, if it's too far gone I'll get a replacement or a fuel cell (Would prefer a traditional tank). This is when I can do a fuel pump mod and return, aftermarket electric pumps and regulators are plentiful. I usually just get a high flow pump, install a mechanical regulator just before the engine set to the required pressure, and cut off of that for the return. Has done me well in both carb'd and EFI engines. After that the axle, suspension, and front suspension, wheels and tires will go on. (Considering a 5 lug conversion, but that's not on the table yet). Bed will be sand blasted, some minor repairs to bed and tailgate, then some primer. Test fit of the bed, tub the wheel wells as required for proper fitment for the fat tires I'll be stuffing under it. Once the bed is mounted, I'll start work on the cab. Everything coming out, down to bare metal. There is some hail damage up top, so those repairs will be made at this point. Everything will then be sand blasted and primer, sound deadening on the interior, dying the carpet black (I think it can be saved, we will see). Custom door cards, everything interior wise will be cleaned up and made black, new gauges(The stock ones suck, and half are broken). Going to pull a couple nice buckets, possibly out of a C5 Corvette (I miss mine terribly, comfort, support, and wide enough to fit a fat body such as myself), and build a nice custom center console for it. New door bushing, possible power window and lock mod (Not dead set on that, but would be nice), and some window tint. Transmission and rear end will remain untouched during this job, with the exception of a possible 5 lug and disc conversion for the rear. I do not want to open the engine if it can be prevented. Engine wise, I just want to clean, paint, maybe a few gaskets, small, easy turbo, and hopefully adding/fixing the A/C system (I haven't been under the hood in a year or so, I don't recall if it has factory A/C. Once I get it buttoned up, running quietly and smooth, comfortable, bugs worked out, looking pretty, then I will be picking up a spare engine and transmission, quite possibly a 2.3, and I want to rip that thing apart and build the hell out of it while I'm still daily driving the truck. Would like to get it to the point where it's just a casual weekend swap at that point, but I have a lot of obstacles to overcome between now and then.

I understand that most of that does not apply to my current questions, however I want you guys to get an idea of what I'm doing here, so maybe it can better help you to help me accomplish these goals. It's going to be cool, I'm going to take lots of pictures and I'll write-up a nice little build article here to help others.

Moving on, I see most people seem to swap to the dual coil/ECU setup from an eclipse. No problem, is there a certain year or model that is most desirable? The megasquirt setup you are speaking of is an option I am not against, however I have zero experience with standalone systems, or where to even start with that.

250 hp is plenty, and far exceeds my expectations on this engine. Which turbo to run is a huge grey area for me. Boost output doesn't have to be much, but easy fitment and as little turbo lag as possible are priority for me.

Some fabrication is ok, what can be done with a whiz wheel and a mig welder.

Going forward, I don't wish to swap the head, or the engine at this point in time. I am looking for a direct (preferably reliable) route to get a turbo on the stock engine, and drive it to work every day. Having the parts ready to go when the engine comes out is vital, as I will have an order list as well as a schedule I would like to stick as close as possible to. I don't want this to turn into a 2 year, maybe I'll finish it on day type of project. Thank you guys for all of your help so far, I'm using it as well as some of my own research to try and build a parts order list for this build. I'd like to start ordering parts within the next couple of weeks.

to get started on low boost u can just kick up the fuel rail pressure with a FMU.... like thousands of entry level supercharger and turbo kits
How effective is it ? A bunch of escorts took their 1.9/2.0L econobox deep into the 14s - bone stock motor, stock injectors, stock ecu

Can the stock injectors keep up though? The engine runs good, I'd hate to run it lean and blow it up. I'll have to research FMU tonight, does that take care of the maf? And does that replace the ECU? That'll need to go no matter what, as I think it's shot. I'd rather upgrade than pay to have it rebuilt, just to replace it down the road.

Where can I find this manifold? Link somewhere or anything to help me get one

ebay Australia/NZ or any other sites that deal with Aus/NZ as those were the places that got the motors with the turbo manifold.

Don't forget the clutch! Been there done that!
