I have a brake that is dragging and its definitely the caliper, does anyone have a good source for a replacement?
The truck is a 4WD and the only thing i can find is for 2WD.
I found information about a montero brake upgrade, but it appears to only apply to the 2WD version.
Can anyone point me in a good direction?

When I had a stuck caliper my local NAPA guy got some from Motion Auto Supply. Mine is an '89 4x4. Took my time with fasteners and borrowed a Snap-on metric tubing wrench for brake lines. May use some good penetrating oil on tubing/nuts to make sure they're not stuck on lines. Best of luck.

According to my limited 1990 parts list, the 84-86 pickups and 84-87 monteros used the same calipers: P/N MB193499 and MB193500. Searching by P/N, couldn't find anything available except from foreign supplies asking $300-500 each. There are custom caliper rebuilders out there, but you'd have to call around to determine availability and cost.

Based on P/Ns, upgrading to the 93-98+ Montero calipers seems very possible. P/Ns for the 4x4 pickup knuckles and hubs are the same for model years 84-90. Since others have performed the upgrade on their Gen2 trucks, it should work for your '84 4x4. However, the rotors on your '84 are different - thinner and of a smaller diameter. So you will have to replace those with Montero rotors (277mm diameter, 24mm thick), but you should be able to mount the two-piston Montero calipers and rotors to the '84 knuckles and hubs. I couldn't tell if the original backing plate and brake lines will need changing, too, but those shouldn't be difficult to modify if needed.

Thank you for getting back to me.
I need to go through and replace many of the parts on the braking system
Pads, rotors, soft lines, calipers, and fluid flush. If there are any
Modifications that need to be done, that is all within my capabilities

I want to look a little further into these mods before I pull the trigger

Thanks again

Can your old calipers be cleaned up and rebuilt? That’s what I did with mine and the rebuild kits were cheap & available. (mine is 2WD)

O'Reilly's can order both the rebuild kits $10.00 or rebuilt calipers $69.00 ( they phoned me about it today they must source from a different brand than what is shown on their site) those Mitsu part #s FMS88 shared are available at Amayama $250.00 each + $85.00 shipping for one ~ get both L & R to save on shipping.

I tried installing a caliper rebuild kit on a 94 Chevy Caprice but needed the dealer to install the piston as at home with hammer & screw driver I was not able to do it ~ I think a press is what they used ??

I'm doing the upgrade on my '88 Gen2 and during a test fit between storms yesterday, I found the backing plate needs to be trimmed or changed to the Montero's. Also the one pot caliper's bracket supporting the flexible rubber-to-hard brake line connection and the hard line too, aren't adaptable to the Montero's two-pot caliper. So they need to be acquired along with the calipers. Otherwise, the fit looks good with adequate clearance between the caliper and a 15" steel rim.
I don't know how the above applies to the Gen1 4wd, but it may be useful to keep this in mind when sourcing the parts for your upgrade.

i went ahead and ordered the brakes for a montero from rock auto. I am proabably going to replace the hard lines to the front brakes from the master while i'm in there.
ill get some pictures and make a youtube video or something and post a link here once its done. I should have the rest of the parts tomorrow.

If the hard lines aren't rusty, you probably don't need to replace those, but now is a good time to replace the flexible rubber hoses, especially if they could be the original hoses. I found that I couldn't use the original short hard tube that screws into the caliper and it's supporting bracket. I could only find foreign sources for those so they're on order. Hopefully I'll have then in a week or two.

Forum user B-Line makes braided stainless brake (and clutch) hose kits for our trucks:

I imagine that I will be needing to replace the hardlines simply because they will likely break off when I attempt to disconnect the brakes. I ordered 2 new rubber lines already
I'm working on the brakes tonight, and I'll post up my results when/if I get done.

Finally got time and good weather to finish this upgrade. Since the calipers were purchased from RA, I needed mounting brackets and hard lines that attach to the caliper.

The original hard line is similarly shaped but a bit shorter. It might have been possible to bend it enough to work but the Montero supporting bracket is definitely required unless you can fashion your own. The backing plates needed trimming, but no other modifications are necessary.
