After buying this 1986 Dodge Ram 50 with 70K original miles and 1 original owner I got it to run the way it is suppose to. When I purchased it 8/09 it did not run. It was diagnosed as needing a carburetor. I do have a little bit of knowledge and I to diagnose as a carburetor. Purchased one from National Carburetors/FC Products. Installed in and would not run right, hesitates, stall etc. Found the fuel was all rust color, drained all the gas, replaced with some, still rusty. Empty tank and found out the fuel tank is rusted. Purchased a fuel tank, sent the carb back and they no charged cleaned it and sent it back. After talking with MaxD50 I also installed a second fuel filter after the pump. Got everything done and still this motor would hesitate and not run well at all. Kept thinking that dirt go into the jet. So this time I pulled it and sent there carb back and sent them mine to rebuild. Got mine back and same result. I tested every computer sensor, which is on/off, replaced o2 sensor. Already replaced spark plugs, breather, pcv. Checked vacuum advance, checked vacuum, fuel pressure, I even got a used computer and tried and still could not get this hesitation out. I finally gave up and sent it to a shop close by, they charge me 4 hrs labor and shim the enrichment solenoid. That allowed more gas then with the choke on it would misfire, it's going to ruin the catlytic converter, so I took it off and called Nat'l Carb and he sent me a new one. I installed it still hesitates and one day I was working with it and it was running and I had the computer harness unplugged and reinstalled and it seem to run better and was ok with it but just did not seem right. Now this truck had other problems like valve stem seals, fuel pump was leaking oil, the water pump would leak a little. Well I drove it about 1500 miles and started to run poorly, so I thought that the valve seals were leaking enough oil to cause the plugs to foul. I installed some motorcraft and it would not even run, then installed NKG and it ran fine for about 30mins then it went south. Carb was flooding, so something is wrong. I finally removed the carb sent it back under warranty, replaced the valve stem seals, pulled old fuel pump off and they did not even put a gasket on either side of the plate. Installed new pump and gaskets. Removed the front cover to replace water pump and there I finally found out what was wrong with the truck. The TIMING BELT WAS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY, it did not line up like my manual was telling me. Belt B was ok. I replaced water pump and the timing belt, reinstalled, put the carburetor back on. GUESS WHAT, The truck is a dream to drive now. I did asked early on what was done, timing belt was not even metioned. I knew it because i had the top cover off and it had a production date of 6/09. A/C works, trans shifts good, it starts, no hesitation at all. Just wanted to share this story just in case someone else would happen to get one like this. :D I do have one question, With it being out of time, do you think some of the exhaust would make it back into the carb, I did open the second fuel filter I have onthe truck and it did not have any dirt at tall???? If somone would know, let me know. Thanks.
