If you're replacing an original canister-style coil with this transformer-style coil, and if the new coil doesn't come with a mounting bracket or ballast resistor (looks like a pinky-sized white ceramic bar, external to the coil itself), that may explain some of the problems you're having.
I'd recommend a Herko B108 coil, comes with the bracket and ballast resistor included, cheap and easy to get off eBay:

BTW, I found the wire routing was easier/tidier when I disassembled the Herko's mounting bracket and then reassembled it with the coil flipped around facing the other direction.
