91 Mighty Max wont rev past 2k RPM

    Hey all,

My '91 2.4l has an issue that has come back. Last year it had an intermittent issue where the check engine light would come on, and the truck would not rev past 2k rpm - it would just surge. Sometimes it happened, sometimes it didnt. The issue devolved to the point where as soon as the engine got to temperature, the issue would come up. Long story short, with the help of a shop, we narrow it down to the throttle position sensor. New sensor and the issue goes away.

Today my wife was diriving the truck, and the light comes on and the truck wont go above 2k. No other symptoms or notible lead-ups. The light went away and the truck started driving normally on its own before she got to work. I get there, idle the truck up to temp - no issue. Drive the the ~25 mins home, no issue. So, I have to imagine it will happen intermittently until failure again.

The question is - did my TPS just fail again? If it did, is there an underlying reason beyond bad luck? And if it isn't the TPS, what else could it be?

The truck does have a new MAF sensor and EGR valve from the first round of diag last year.

It’s possible the wiring is corroding and causes the TPS to draw too many amps and fry itself. The ecu also could be on the fritz, and a fresh tps sensor just settles it for the time being. I’ve seen the ecu issue with a 1GA Dsm I had in highschool.
