I have a 1989 d50 4x4 that had the 2.6 G54B. The head cracked a few years ago and I want to bring it back to life. Ive heard you can do a v6 swap out of a montero pretty easily but I've also heard that if you don't start with a v6 truck it doesn't work. Any advice or tips?

The auto trans is specific to the 6G7X (V6) engines so it isn't possible to swap the V6 engine in without the right transmission. I am not sure of how the mounts for the V6 4x4 transmission are laid out, so you would need to be 100% sure you could swap the whole drivetrain before handing over cash or investing yourself into the swap.

so for what it is worth i just installed a 3.0 into an 88 ram 50 4X4 that was a 2.6 it is a lot of work just going from a carb to fi is fun but i must mention the engine is not a straight bolt in i had to move the frame mounts i use a fuel tank out of a 94 mighty max to get the correct size and electric fuel pump it has been a journey i hope to get it up and running this week end good luck with your build
