    Shifter Pin Removal

So, for those of us that don't have three or four hands, is there a trick to pressing out the pin for the shifter pivot ball? I have a new ball, and bushing, but can't get the pin to even move. My problem is trying to hold the shift lever, punch, and operating the press... Does the plate have to come off (i.e. disassemble the upper part of the shifter). I could fabricate a cradle to hold the shifter, but I would rather not if I don't have to. Any help would be appreciated!

It's a bit redneck, but I used a bench vise and a hammer. I got it started by hitting it with a big hammer while having it over the top of the open vise so the pin would drive down between the jaws. I don't have a press in my home shop, so have to be innovative sometimes to get things done. Once it starts moving I was able to just use a punch and tap it out. I used the vise to push the pin back in, and then spaced it with a socket on the exit side so I could crank the pin all the way through.

    Best of luck!

    smart!

put the bushing on the ball and in the hole, not in the socket the shift lever goes in. seen some idiot drop his bushing into his pan by doing that... (that idiot is me, shhh, dont tell! )

in all seriousness, sometimes you have to get redneck to remove a part. innovation is key.
