    2.4 L Dizzy

    I would like to have more control of my ignition down the road.

    I have a 1988 2.0 L distributor. I'm assuming it would be a direct replacement for my 2.4 l Distributor.

    My question is....

    Is the 1988 a hall effect distributor like my 1991? IF it is.... can someone suggest a traditional Distributor That I could use with an MSD system.. or lock out for an aftermarket system.

    Does the 2.6 distributor work?

    It is a hall effect sensor. And no, you can't use a 2.6 distributor (AFAIK you can only swap 4G6X distributors around)

    2.4 distributor has a disc & reader, same as a DSM CAS. Nothing like the earlier or starquest VR type dizzy
    Those are compatible with basic megasquirted starions, and MSD.
    They lockout (=wire tie posts and remove the vacuum cannister, to fix timimg).... so the ecu now controls ignition curve
    some 2.6 starquests run the 2.4 distributor, but requires a 6mm spacer

    Time to look into fitting a crank trigger I think and just use the dizzy for distributing the spark. I'm NOT going through the hassle of changing to a DSM coil pack set up.. I'm not that smart ( LOL )

    ^^ couple of caveats dash, 'the reader' is an optical sensor package consisting of an
    led (as an emitter) and a photodiode (as a reciever), the leading & trailing edges
    of the digital signal (slots in disc passing through 'beam') are razor sharp.
    VR (variable reluctor 'sensors') are usually 2 wire non -powered & produce
    analog wave form.
    Hall Effect are mostly 3 wire, powered,& contain some kind of signal booster
    & circuitry to do analog to digital conversion.
    Better than VR, not as good as Optical (imho).

    reading LSRMike website from way back he detailed how adding a couple of wires to the truck harness,
    he was able to wire in the DSM transistor & coilpack and run a DSM ecu
    A few other items were outlined too.

    A powerful 2.6 starion adapted a DSM CAS (+ added a few sensors), ran a DSM loom so an AEM ecu can tunr it


    DSM CAS most likely achieve whatever you need.
    May be wise to contact a megasquirt-head before adding a trigger. Shed light on your options

    I am really leaning towards the FITech or Holley Sniper modded to a Carb intake... The crank trigger would only be for the MSD.

    I'm assuming it would bolt to the damper on the 4G64... if not I still have the 4G63 Truck motor also...

    - late reply, post #6 , yes , to set base timing ground this plug,
    Adjust dist as needed, remove ground & ecm timing control will come on line.

    I actually keep a wire right there so I can adjust at the track... I just ground out, adjust and unplug.

    those FItech, Holley stuff have always been corny, lower level systems... coming a day late & a dollar short

    I'd chose stock DSM electronics to run a boosted 2.4, over that stuff. Like 4 wires to power up

    The issue is finding the things needed. The Fitech and Holley is self contained. The DSM electronics would mean swapping or slicing into the wiring harness which I'm not comfortable doing.

    I have seen many musclecars find dramatic improvements using this system. Also, the electronics in my truck are from 1991.. the FI tech is still years newer in technology.

    AND... I didn't have to cut a wire.

    Only to mention a few points, not argue or convince...

    FItech & Holley would show 'dramatic improvements' over a carb and mechanical dizzy. It'd better. Not over any oem MPinjection tho
    6 litres would mask inefficiencies, try it on a 2 liter.
    Old DSM electronics manage 2.0L @ tripple their stock output. I wouldn't attempt that with this 'newer tech' FI/Holley
    DSM engine loom separates from cabin loom rather easily. Powers up just as FI/Holley requires


    ...but if parts unavailable, and you're uncomfortable with oem wiring, it makes semse to go with the "simpler" stuff.

    I was going through videos of some stand alone systems and that would be great.. but I would want a piggy back system as this is still a street vehicle.
    I suppose the overwhelm factor has driven me in the direction I'm headed.

    I really wish my factory computer had a flashable ROM. I have been told that the 95 ECM is flashable but can not be used in place of earlier ECM's... also it wouldn't have provision for boosted applications.

    Does anyone know the major difference between the 2.6 and 2.0/2.4 litre distributor? I'm assuming the early one are just a magnet and reluctor. If it's just a matter of a spacer, I have a friend with a machine shop that we could design something.

    Anyone have an old 2.6 L dizzy from the early 80's kicking around?
