    Identifying what engine I have

I have a 1987 Might Max. I do not know what engine is in this truck. I know about the tag on the fire wall, but this engine is not the original. It was pulled from a D50 of an unknown year. My question is, do these engines have a way to identify what it is besides the fire wall plate?

Easy - alloy timing cover will be a 4G54/G54B engine (if it's an early Plymouth or Dodge this may be a 4G52 2.0 but they are pretty uncommon now) A plastic timing cover with a carb - 4G63/G63B (they did come with a 4G32 in South America and a few other countries)
A plastic timing cover with EFI - 4G64
    A V6 will be a 6G72.
    Diesel will be a 4D55 or 56.

This engine has an alloy timing cover. I've been told the 78-81, I think, Dodge and Plymouth 2.0 had a timing chain. Will a 2.6 timing chain fit these 2.0's?

I suspect this engine is the 4g52. How can I confirm it? What makes it a 2.0 or 2.6? I’m assuming it’s in the combustion chamber.

Get a wire wheel on a drill and give that metal ledge sticking out of the block next to exhaust port #4 (the top face which would be the block deck) a pass or 2. The engine number and block designation code should be stamped on it. Your truck has had both an engine and transmission swap going by the numbers on that ID plate.

I’ll give a good brushing when I get home from work today. This engine and transmission definitely has been swapped. They came from a d50. The guy that swapped them has no idea of year though. They were swapped out about 15 years ago and the truck has been sitting for about 13 yrs now. All he could tell me is the d50 looked identical to the mighty max.

As claych commented above it is #1 exhaust port. I had a brain fade looking at the block - my bad
Use non-caustic oven cleaner to attack your engine and engine bay (the non-LYE based stuff) Works a treat

My next question is, do these numbers help to determine the year model?

Pennyman1 said this in another discussion “4g52 is also known as a g52b in the USA - the 2.0 version of the g54b 2.6. Both are Astron series motors.”

Astron series for sure, (chain driven cam/ oil pump/dual countershafts)
2.0 litre,? can be verified by 84mm bore & 90mm stroke...
I am going to guess very early '80's eng build date, (< 85),
-mechanical rocker arm jet valve head-
As always My observations are open to correction !!

Hypothetically - yes. You would really need to know your engine number sequencing to figure out when and what the engine came out of though and that data is probably sitting in a filing cabinet full of decaying microfiche. The 2.0 Astron is a good all round engine. If you wanted to build a solid daily driver that can give you modest performance, it's up for the task.

Judging by parts that fit ie distributor cap and valve cover gasket, my best guess is 1979-1982.

    yes - the g52b was a 79-82 motor, replaced by the g63b in 1983.

Am I correct in saying this is a 2.0?
