Anyone with experience with the 5D56T or 4M40, vs the 4d55t engines?

Considering whether it would be worth it to put in a 4d56T or a 4m40 (the later 2.8 liter diesel) in my old 84 D50, in place of the 4d55t that's in it now, that's having issues. I need to spend some money either way, and I'm considering getting a newer truck (which would end up being gas instead of diesel, which I don't like). Even a jdm used 4m40 is cheaper than a late 90's tacoma, and I do actually really like the D50 and how I've got it set up and all. And I can't afford a new duramax chevy colorado by any stretch I'm wondering if anyone on here has driven the various mitsu diesel engines and can comment on power and such and also whether they would bolt up to the same transmission (5speed manual) as the 4d55t in my truck.

    Thanks

    Zeke

Just note that the 4d56 is the only other one that will bolt to your transmission, all others are completely different bellhousings and flywheels. At that point you might as well look at a 4BT, overall you will probably be around the same cost

4D56 is nice because it also uses a lot of the same parts and accessories as the 4D55, so its easy to adapt to a 4D55 application and to easier toget parts for than a 4M40.

Agreed, just get you a new 4D56 and you’ll be running better than new! I’ve put 50k on mine now and haven’t had a single issue.
