1993 Mighty Max 2wd power steering conversion, possible?

    Hi all,

Recently I have been thinking of doing a power steering conversion to my 1993 Mighty Max 2WD which originally came with manual steering.

Is there any direct bolt on ways to do it?

Is it possible to just use 4WD's steering gear box and power steering pump? Is there any power steering pump bracket I can directly bolt on ?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanx in advance~

Hey I have a power steering conversion done to my 1st gen. The box just bolts right in. You can use pretty much any Mitsubishi power steering box of that era - 1st gen Pajero/Montero should be the same, 2nd gen mighty max, Galants etc.
The box body and arm is all the same, its just the top section that's different (its actually shorter which is why it was done to my truck to clear the exhaust manifolds on the v6), here in nz a lot of the 2nd gen trucks were power steer and that's where my box came from

I cant help with the pump as my engine is not a Mitsubishi. , I would imagine you can use the 4wd one with out any issue

the steering boxes from the 2wd and 4wd trucks are the same for the 2nd gen, with no mods to the steering shaft from the column. The bracket for the pump and the pulleys to make it work have to come from the 4g64 motor, as they are different from the 2.6 motor. The lines are going to depend on the vehicle the steering parts come off of.

So you are saying using pump and pulley from a 4g64 motor, say galant, and use 4wd mighty max steering box?

It depends on the belt layout but the FWD engines all use low profile pulleys to keep everything as close to the timing cover as possible. The power steering pulley usually piggybacks off the water pump pulley. Maybe look at a 2.4 Starwagon/Express van engine with PS and look at the layout in that as an option.

Can anyone elaborate as to the differences between the inside/outside mounted gearboxes? Does anyone know when this was made a model year change, and what models apply?

86 and older first gens are inside of the frame, late 86 to 96 are outside of the frame.

Had a question. I have a 90' MM with a 2.6L installed to replace the 2.4L. To add power steering do I just need to find a 4wd truck with power steering?

My truck is a 2WD. I was thinking i could harvest everything I need from a 2.6L 4WD truck with the exception of the steering box unless the 4WD box would work on a 2WD.

if it is off an 87 up truck, all the steering boxes are the same, 2wd and 4wd. Pitman arm may be different.

Can I use the pitman arm from my manual box? The steering system is still that of a 1990 it's just a 2.6L engine now.

I read on this site that the 4wd steering box won't work on a 2wd. It won't bolt up.

I have an 89 with power steering on it 2wd I am parting out very soon. It has the 2.6 though, so you will need the correct pump, bracket, and water pump pulley for the 2.4 motor you have. The hoses may work with the 2.4 pump location - I am not sure about that.

I need all the power steering parts for the 89 you are parting out. Mine has the 2.6 but in a 90 2WD frame.

I plan to post pics when the truck is done. All I have left is a small punch list of items to take care of and to add PS.

This is a 90' with a 2.6L swapped in. I harvested a PS setup from a 87' 2WD with a 2.6L. I haven't started the conversation but was assuming it would be straight forward. I already have the pulley on my engine for the PS pump belt.
