    Shifter Problem

So I bought a bushing to put on my shifter and at first it was fine but after driving around for a while the 1st and 2nd gears got weird. I have to turn the shifter counterclockwise to go in first and second. I'm not sure if I maybe bought the wrong bushing or what.

You might want to check the bolts for your shifter base. Might have vibrated loose.

make sure the plastic ball on the shifter handle is not split or loose - you should not be able to rotate the stick at all.

I'm going to see if it's loose and check the ball as well. I also noticed if i press down on the shifter i can shift into first and second. My shifter has always been very sloppy i can move it around a lot, not the handle itself but I compared it to my friends 280z and his shifter is very stiff compared to mine and thats why he told me to buy a bushing for it to make it stiff.

that ball on the shaft sounds like it split - Geronimo's did that too. I ended up replacing the shifter, but that was 25+ years ago.

I just did the same with shifter replacement. I may have a line on the bushing, Mitsu patrs guy says no go on locating a factory replacement. I saw one on Ebay Australia under the heading " Gearbox Shifter Bush Kit Some Mitsubishi Challenger to Early 90's. Checking with the trans guy to see if that is a fitment.

My bushings got lost in the mail, so my friend and I pulled the shifter out to look at it and found a massive chunk of metal has broken off and on the other side it's cracked. Does anyone where where I can buy this? Theres a 2wd truck in a junkyard nearby would the shifter from that one work in my truck?

Measure the reach of the shifter so you get the right one I have 2 5 speeds and each has a different length shifter where it goes into the tranny so you don't waste time getting the wrong one.

Rockauto carries just the bushing part.

    Got any part numbers?

    2wd and 4wd shifters are different - 3 bolt for 2wd and 4 bolt for 4wd

82 shifter does not work in a 87, I wanted a short throw and I wasted 4 hours because I fucked it up for the old shifter. I finally got it in at the expense of my bushing popping off and me digging with a pair of needle nose for another hour to have it fall into the pan. needless to say I had a bad day. it was 3" shorter and I had to push down for 5th. all shifters were different between 1st ten, 2nd gen, 2wd, 4wd, and obviously manual and auto. but make sure when you put it in the notch in the plate and the metal gasket are aligned and are against the 4x4 whifter. I know this is an old thread but its still a good tip for anyone reading in the future. hello future!

I know this thread is older but, you can also use Montero shifters they are taller than stock and straight so you end up with a rat fink shifter. Had one on the GW till I modified an aftermarket starquest short throw, which is still on it.
