Rear seal transmission installation; sockets always screw up the seal?
I'm suspecting the reason the rear transmission seal replacements, two now, have ended up leaking immediately. The mechanics are using a socket to drive the seal into place which I think is distorting it.
Is it true this seal cannot be correctly installed without a real seal installation tool?
Thank you.

Not true, but using a socket to install it is a bad idea. Either they are damaging it with the socket, not installing it flush, or the nose on your driveshaft is really beat up.
