    1989 4x4 5 speed..... less engine

ok from what i can find the 1989 4x4 came with a 2.6l 4G54 carb, has anyone done a swap for a 4G56 2,5l EFI?

i just picked up the truck and the engine is missing I'm sure i can locate a 4G54 no problem but i was winding if the trans would work and how much re wiring there would be for the EFI

Hard to say what makes a bad motor unless you can see and hear it running. Noisy timing chain in the 4G54 2.6 is indicative of a motor that hasn't been well maintained, they are prone to issues with jet valves in the head and the Mikuni carb gets a fair amount of hate (normally from being waaay overdue for a rebuild). Noisy hydraulic tappets can sometimes be cured by performing an engine flush during a service. The blocks and bottom ends of them are near bomb proof and seem to survive nearly all levels of neglect and abuse. The only weak point in the bottom ends are from balance shaft failures due to excessive bearing wear. Other than the aforementioned comments they are like any other engine.

You have a couple of options but they will be set up differently. If you're looking for a direct bolt it replacement you will be looking at the first obvious picks (D-50 and Mighty Max), and early Mitsubishi built vehicles such as the Sapporo Technica/Dodge Challenger, and the Conquest which is turbo EFI.
