    1987 Mighty Max 4x4 with a g54b???

I have a 1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 4 x 4 with the 2.6 l motor. Is this truck a wide block or narrow block motor? The reason asking if I have a extra 5 speed trans that is the narrow block style I'm having problems with the current transmission in the truck popping out of first gear and was hoping to use the 5 speed that I have extra to put in the truck instead of having to rebuild the current transmission. I have read that some of these 2.6 Motors are narrow block from a chart that I found on this forum. You guys have always been a great help in the past and I appreciate any input that I receive thanks again everyone I really appreciate the help.

I think the 4G54's mated to auto transmissions are narrow block. Easy enough to take an auto block and retrofit a manual crank and flywheel.

I believe your g54b is a wideblock. I think the only narrow block g54b's were some of the very early 80's versions. Pennyman can confirm this. A way to check is to check spacing between the lower two bellhousing bolts. If its in the ~12" its narrow, if its in the ~13" its wideblock.

87 2.6 motors are wideblock regardless of tranny attached. 79 - 86 3 speed auto 2.6 and all g63b motors are narrow block.

Is there a narrow 4x4 manual transmission that will bolt up to a g54b?

Short answer - no. All 4x4's are wide block pattern. Not all are for 4 cylinder engines though as later models were equipped with 6G72 V6's (they are non compatible)
