    Power steering???

I'm getting this 1995 Mighty max as a graduation gift and it doesn't have power steering. Upon further research i noticed power steering was an option for around $300 if i'm not mistaken. So, i was wondering if it was possible to install it myself, and/or where to get it. Thanks in advance!

is it 2wd or 4x4? You will need the steering box, hoses, pump and mounting bracket for the pump.

power steering makes such a difference on these trucks. i have one with and without. driving the one without through parking lots sucks big time.

It's a 2WD, and it blows not having it, i'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to power steering and how it works.
What all would i have to tear out to put the power steering in, or is it just an easy install?

you will need everything that pennyman listed. its pretty straight forward and should not give you any trouble. also grab the reservoir.

i can check to see if the 4wd has the same steering box as the 2wd cause i have access to both. if so than you can get it for a little under 300 on ebay or rock auto. your best bet would be a parts yard if your on a tight budget. just make sure that its not blown out or leaking if you do pull one.

    good luck

just checked the 4wd box on my 87 and it looks to be the same as the 2wd ones i have with power steering. i will do some more checking but from what i can tell they are the same.

I thought one was inboard and the other outboard. Frame mounting is what I'm talking about.

i'll get some pics and post them. defiantly do not want him to spend money on the wrong part. will also check how it mounts to the frame and the bot locations.

ok, so these pics suck but if you look closely enough you can see they will not work because the mounting pattern is flipped. they both mount to the outside of the frame, everything else is identical except the mounting.

this is the 95 2wd box

this is the 87 4wd box

it could easily be fabbed but probably not what you were looking to do.

OK so there both outboard. But one is front steer and the other is rear steer.
Front steer = tie rods in front of the spindle center line.
Rear steer = tie rods behind the spindle center line.

Going from the pics and the last comment from camoit - does that mean that all it would take to use the steering box is removal of the steering pivot arm from the output on the steering box and flipping it 180 degrees? I know I'm making it sound overly simple but what do you guys think?

I would think it would steer in reverse of the other.

the 95 box is behind the wheel and the 87 is in front of the wheel. the mounting pattern is different also. the 4wd wont mount to the 2wd frame.

Ah, o.k. The pic doesn't make that entirely obvious on first glance. The 2WD steering set up must foul the 4WD transfer somehow...

The 4WD is in front because there is a drive line in the way. He needs to find the box from a 2WD or what ever he has now. Unless the pitman arms can be swapped. Then there is a chance the output shaft will be lower when put on the other truck.

I converted my 2wd to power steering from standard steering a few years ago. I got the pump, reservoir and steering gear from a auto wrecker in NC. I saved a ton of money getting used parts. All I had to buy new were the lines.
