    2.0/2.4L adjustable cam gears ?

    Hi
    Are 'SOHC specific' adjustable cam gears available for the 2.0/2.4L ?
    I stumbled onto a website featuring some chinese product, but looks like its no longer available
    I don't want to use the thicker DSM gear. Don't look right to me
    I'll cut a circle in my timing cover to expose the gear (once I get the correct adj gear)

    Can we ask why you are looking to make a change?

    As far as I know there is nothing there. You can drill a new pin hole but,,, and it's a big BUT,,

    Unless you are building an engine like LSR Mike has there is no need to mess with cam timing. You can cause lots of problems.
    My engine cam is advanced 6 deg but then again it's built for the cam. It's a V6 with the biggest cam I could get then another 0.005 added to the lift along with 10-1 compression and 1.5 roller rockers and roller lifters a 500CFM carb with MSD zappers and limiter.


    A 2, 4, or 6, deg shift is not much movement of the cam. So be careful what you do.

    All turbo builds for me.
    Quite a few starion owners (2.0 & 2.6 sohc) experienced mild > significant > substantial gains by adjusting/dialing in
    Probably attributed to various regrinds

    The regrind would explain that. Ask LSR Mike about the adjustable. That guy would know.

    Camoit, it was only 160...I had my cam re-grind set at a 282 duration. I didn't mess with a adjustable timing gear. As I remember it, the 2.0 and the 2.4 Timing gears are the same size, it's a matter of getting the timing marks right. nothing you can't figure out with a degreeing wheel. The guys down under (Australia )will make an adjustable one out of your existing solid one, but talk about shipping delays....I've always worried about the set screws coming loose, I eliminated the balance shafts and have discovered EVERYTHING needs locktite! and the proper torque settings.

    you can use a adjustable cam gear for a 89 to 99 mitsubishi eclipse 4g63 dohc turbo.

    The upper timing cover needs a spacer but the lower cover fits fine

    Anything above 70 these trucks feel like the body is going to shred from the wind. LOL
    So at 160 it must be like getting sucked into a black hole. You can see the hood warping and stretching the closer to the center of the hole you get. Then you pull the shoot as you pass through the center and your ejected out the other side in the plasma stream, only to notice your now younger with long white hair and a full beard.
    I could have sworn one of your pictures it looked like you covered the front leading edges with heat tiles from NASA. hahah.

    I'm gonna cut a hole in the timing cover anyway, to expose the gear.
    The DOHC piece will actually 'fit', but I just don't want half a gear poking out that won't be doing anything

    the AEM piece looks like it can actually be disassembled, cut/shave off the unused part of the gear to where it's flush with the anodized center... then reassemble. It just might fit under the stock cover then. Scribe a new mark when dialing in


    yeah, the aussie gear-mod is an option. I can probably find someone in the usa to mod the stock gear to adjustable.

    I've never deleted balance shafts, from any of my sohc or DSMs. I think a big part of the charm of these motors is smoothness
    ....along with the SOHC simplicity. As long as the shafts/bearings are in good condition, they stay. One motor I bought was shabby, so I stripped then dumped it.
    With the "right" street setup, you'll hardly ever need to see north of 6000rpm in daily use, while still being pinned in the seat
    A fairly decent sized turbo will still spool up quick enough - delivering a broad torque band

    the same thing happens on the dohc 4g63 the adjustable cam gear wont fit under the stock timing cover.I was working on a clear timing cover that the adjustable cam gear would fit,

    If you come up with a solidworks file I can have one cut out of aluminum. I have a good friend with a nice CNC machine. Clear would need to be cleaned internally quite a bit. There is a lot of dirt flying around in there. But it would look cool if you can cut it out of one peace.

    I cut out the cam gear cover on my 4G63 - the front face of the adjustable cam gear sits flush with the cut out section of the cover. You can see the whole gear without the teeth being too exposed. Here's a pic of it dummied together:

    An adjustable cam gear will work and it's a lot safer to use on Mitsubishi non-interference heads like the 2.0/2.4. It will only shift the torque band up or down depending on how you set it. I think it comes down to trial and error with altering the cam timing. It won't make big 'power' by itself but if you mess with ignition timing and add the usual mods (porting, headers + exhaust, increased air/fuel flow capacity etc) it all adds up. I've long held the belief there is plenty of hidden power in these engines without having to do anything radical to them.
