I am curious as to the difference between a 1 ton and base, or at least to know why named them 1 tons because I cant see my truck carrying 1 ton in the bed. The only thing I can think of is that the truck weighs 1 ton.

Long beds were also known as 1 tons and the only other difference according to my 1989 Mighty Max sales brochure is they came with power steering standard.
that seems like a good answer. I guess the just said 1 ton to make it sound good
thay also came with 2.6, 5spd, 9" rear axles and 4.22 gears - springs are heavier - all were standard cab long beds. There was even 1 ton models made in 1st gen body styles, but never imported to the US. They were to compete with the Toyota 1 ton pickups of the time.

Would the 9" rear end accept the Power Brute LSD?
no, but it will accept the lsd from the 92 up montero not the sport - they are 9" not sure about the independent rears though

Is it true the Mitsu 9" rear is a copy of Ford 9" and the Mitsu 8" is also a copy, but scaled down?
yes the 9" mitsu is a beefier copy of a ford 9", not sure if the 8" is the same.

I thought they looked similar! Where the diff case separates on the pinion side instead of plain vanilla GM style with a cover plate behind the pumpkin.
Well it's nice to know there's a bomb proof, bolt in diff available for us. The guys on Pirate 4x4 raved about the strength of the Mitsu 9" -- now we know why it's so good.

and 4.88 and 5.13 gears are available for them - it is rumored that 9" ford diff gears will fit, but I don't know that for sure.
