Is it true tranny tunnels are different sizes between auto and manual?

Please tell me it's not true and I won't have to expand the tranny tunnel going from a KM145 to an AW372...

the auto tranny tunnels are larger than manual tranny tunnels, and requires offset pedals for gas and brake. It is true, sorry...

What generation truck are you doing this to Noah

    AW372 Transmission
    AW372.jpg

Looks like the manual transmission except for the big box oil tray

KM145 are terrible transmissions, glad your looking to get rid of it. They usually get rid of themselves by self destucting

    Thanks guys.

2nd Generation. Excuse me, it's the KM132, not the KM145. Narrow block 2.0 5 speed. I'm getting so burnt out on all of the acronyms and numbers to remember. I thought I had everything lined up for the conversion, pedalset, steering column and linkage, 3.54 rear diff. But then someone made an offhand comment about this today on Facebook group. I guess it's better to find out now rather than when it's on the tranny jack. New crossmember, too, eh?

I wanted to hook this up to the diesel. Which needs to be totally rebuilt.

Getting so discouraged. I'm considering throwing in the towel. It sucks not having a car buddy who can help out. All of my old car buds moved to different cities. Overwhelmed with the to-do list that keeps getting longer.

Maybe I should step away from all of this for a while.

I do things all myself also. Your right too, it is hard. I have found ways to do things that would usually take 2 people to do and do it myself. I probably would finish things a little quicker also if I had that extra person.
Just do a little at a time each day and try to not add to the list until you have moved through your prior list. You'll find that some days your motivated and others are spent thinking about it which also is accomplishing.

Would the wideblock 5 speed from a 2.4 fit without modifications?

    I guess it's time for Plan B.

    R5M21 (1990+ wideblock 5 speed 2.4L)
    1 3.967/4.330
    2 2.136/2.356
    3 1.360/1.509
    4 1.000/1.000
    5 0.856/0.834

This is about 2650 RPM at 65 MPH on a 195/65/15 tire with the 3.54 rear end. The rev limit for the 4D56 is about 4000. Too high to cruise at.

AW372 (1989 and older wideblock automatic)
    1 2.826
    2 1.493
    3 1.000
    4 0.688

    That's about 2130 RPM.

Maybe I can swap out an overdrive gear and use the manual.

Or man up, stop crying about it, punch the floorpan out and get one of these things.

Not like I'm the first to encounter this kind of problem.

the auto are WAY bigger than a KM132. I know because I have had both and put one in the other. There is SOOO much room around my KM132 thats sitting where the 2.6 auto was. And my buddies 2.4 auto is even bigger than my 2.6 auto was.

I always assumed the floor pan was the same form factor from Mitsubishi since everything else is like Legos. If I do the custom tranny hump thing, I could do one of those nice Lokar double bend floor shifters instead of column mount and clean up the firewall a bit. Maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all. My biggest fear is blowing a million holes through the pan with my novice welding skills. But I guess you have to learn how to do it somehow.

When I got a doner truck, '87 with an automatic, I never notice the hump any larger then normal and I had to remove the trany and engine. Shipped the trany to Texas and truthfully the part that seemed larger then the manual was below the top half of the trany. Yes it was larger and that is a fact, but it all connected up to a wideblock engine just like a manual trany do also. I find it hard to think they put 2 floor pans in trucks, one for Auto and one for manual. Though they did create a block that was 1 inch wider, so who knows on that. Wonder if the humps were wider only and not deeper into the truck cab area.

    trany_pans.jpg

The bellhousing diagrams are not compared in size in this illustration. The proportion of the auto trany was shown larger in the ASA program and that's why it appears larger in the image. They are both the same size for mounting to engine blocks. From that point back, the size is unknown in compared to the manual.

    tranyhousing.giffloorpans.gif

Here they are in correct proportion. Found additional floor pans styles for possible comparing.

The 1st gen trucks definitely have different tunnels for manual vs auto - when I changed out Geronimo's cab for a cab from an auto truck, I had to bend the gas pedal to the left, and shift the clutch and brake pedals over so I could get to the gas pedal. I am still not happy with that setup, so I am going to mod the tunnel so I can put the pedal back where it belongs. If you have the 2 gas pedals side by side, one goes to the left of the pivot(auto) and the other goes to the right (manual), a difference of 2 inches. If the 2nd gen are different, I am not sure, but knowing mitsu, they don't change much over the years in the body department.

A guy on Facebook said he measured the tunnel on his automatic truck (which he converted to manual) and said it was 13" at its widest point by the shifter and 7" tall at its tallest point.

They are FOR SURE 100% different on 2nd gen trucks, like I said I have had both. When putting the manual into my auto tranny tunnel truck I had to bang the tunnel in closer to the tranny to be able to fit all the pedals in there and not have the gas pedal pushing into the side of the tunnel. There is also no cut out for where the shifter goes in the auto tranny tunnel trucks, another reason I am sure they come with two different floor pans.

Mitsu switched over from AW372 to A500 (I think) in 1990. So there might be yet another kind of floor pan.

Hey Pennyman, what was this mysterious old school narrow block automatic transmission you mentioned in another thread? I thought all autos were wideblock.

3 spd autos from 79 - 86 are all narrow blocks - 2.0 (both astron and sirius) and 2.6 motors. They are even interchangeable 2.0 to 2.6 - unlike the manuals in the same timeframe.

that is correct - a aisin warner built baby 904 under license from mopar - not interchangeable with an american 904. So what did the thiefs get out of your place?

The AW gears or case is not interchangeable with Mopar? Because I started emailing around about re-gearing the overdrives in the AW372 and R5M21 to make them more diesel friendly. But the gear guys said there are no on the shelf parts for those trannies anymore. And custom cut OD is probably way too expensive for me.

I used an online calculator and running fat boy 29" tires would get 65 MPH revs down to about 2100. But I don't know if those would fit under a RWD truck with a 2/3 drop.

Local methheads got two heirloom rings, my poker bankroll and a jump drive with Bitcoins. BTC were a bad idea. I was too embarrassed to tell the insurance adjuster how much I actually bought them for when I told her the market price today. They did not take my sweet fixed gear bike or computer for some reason. And thank God they did not find the garage clicker and take my tools or parts or damage my vehicle.

I feel so foolish for not putting the stuff in a safety deposit box at the bank but I wanted to have cash ready if I wanted to play cards or the zombie apocolypse started or whatever. I told you guys earlier that quality of life type crime was getting pretty bad in this neighborhood so I bought renter's insurance when I got new auto insurance this year. So I'll be able to recoup at least some of the losses, I hope. Enough to get out of my lease and GTFO of here. I'm kinda sick of Cali to be honest.

Getting more jaded as I get older. I hope I don't become cynical.
