Tranny only goes into 5th and reverse

New to forum and I'm about to purchase a 1989 sport d50 4x4 as a fixer upper for my stepson. It's a good family discount deal so can't pass it up.

motor runs like a timex watch but,the problem lies within the tranny. It only goes into 5th and reverse. Does this sound like a tranny rebuild or could it be something as simple as linkage?

It's worth the time to pull it apart and fix it.
Does it grind in the other gears? Or is it just not going at all?

You could take the tranny to a transmission shop and ask them to give you a price to fix it. If its something simple it may not cost much to fix and you might decide to have them do it. If it is a major problem they will either give you a price to repair it, or tell you it's not worth it. If you decide not to fix it, it won't have cost you anything to find out where you stand with it. At that point they might offer to find you another one.

sounds like the internal shifting forks.. I had a similar problem and a roll pin had come out. easiest thing to do is drain the oil, see if anything comes out in that, then drop the pan and see what is in the bottom...go from there.
