    1987, although I have heard that some of the second generation body styles were sold as 1986 vehicles.

    Yes they were sold in starting in 3/86 as new models alongside the 1st gen 86 model year - that is why the parts books have that to 3/ 86 and 4/86 and newer split for parts.
