So I suck with the timing on these things, but I knew the distributor was 180 out when putting the top end back together. So I corrected the problem but I still can't get the truck to start and run so I can time with my light. All my timing marks on the crankshaft and the camshaft are aligned and at TDC. I just need distributor help.
Check simple stuff first. Check ignition coil wires, make sure they aren't reversed. Make sure you're getting spark. All that simple stuff that so very often gets even the best of mechanics.
IS #1 cylinder at the top? If I remember right the rotor then should be at about 11 o'clock try a tooth either way if that doesn't work!
Royster are you referring to the wires ran from the coil to the distributor? Thanks for the responses!
Do a voltage check at the coil and see if it's getting power there first (should be no reason why you haven't got power there as you've only pulled the distributor out) If you are getting power there then move onto the distributor. If you have power at the distributor then try full advancing/retarding the distributor and see if you get any signs of life when cranking it over.
are you getting spark from the distributor?....for example @ the plugs? if not you probably need an "ingition control module"found inside the distributor. they typically burn out when key is left in "run" position & the vehicle is not on.

Turned out to be the ignition coil. What is a good coil that has been put into these trucks?
The Bosch 'T' (transformer) type coils are pretty good. Make sure you get the right one for your application as there are 2 types (electronic and neanderthal tech)
