Newbie needs help.
Hey Ram 50 lovers. I just bought my 87' Ram 50 about two months ago as a first vehicle with a G63B engine in it. I love this truck and have put in a lot of time into her. I recently changed the leaking head gasket along with the intake and exaust manifold gasket, and when i put it all back together i triple checked my timing to make sure that everything was TDC. tried to give her a start and no dice. Been juggleing with the distributor and such for about a week now and in need of help! Thanks!

Your distributor is out by 180 deg.. We see it all the time. Re check everything starting with pulling the spark plug and valve cover. You can place a cable tie in the cilinder to feel for TDC. Along with looking at the marks on the crank. Then look at the valves. they should be closed and the cam mark close to where is should be. Then pull the dist, cap and look to see if the rotor points close to the #1. That is the lower left corner.

could my cap or wires be on wrong? when i pulled the cap off my #1 is in lower right corner.

If your looking directly at the cap from drivers fender, No1 is bottom right side. With all the timing marks lined up, on the compression stroke, the dizzy rotor should be aimed at the no1 spark plug wire.

To tell you the truth it does not matter where the rotor points (IMO) as long as the wires go to where piston on TDC is. Then it will fire. On mine I would just toss it in there and not give a c--- where it pointed but thats just me. I see a 4 cylinder engine 4 single cylinder engines bolted together with some common parts to make it go. Thats just the way I see things so size and cylinders make no difference to me. Unless it's an odd fire and there is a physical difference in degrees between TDC. Then it make a difference. Otherwise it's just a uniform thing.
So to answer your question yes the wires can be off.
All the crank does is go round and round and push the pistons up.
