    Front axles not engaging!

I've got a problem with my 4x4, I placed the rear end on jackstands and jacked up the front and removed the the auto hub covers. The front hubs are locked in. When I start it and put it in gear the driveshafts front and rear turn, but the front axles do not turn. If I spin the front wheels the transaxles turn but are not engaged with the differential. Tell me something good!

since I have my engine apart and the front on jackstands I pulled the cover off of the differential to take a look. bummer, the pinion gear is ground down to nothing and the ring is beat up also. are parts available to rebuild or should I look for a junkyard part. my ratio is 4.22 I heard that is rare

All the 4x4 MM stuff, technically, is rare-ish. The V6 models used the 4.22 and shouldn't be too hard to locate. Have you:

    1. Searched for used parts via car-part.com? This is a search engine connected to professional wrecking yards throughout the US and Canada (eh)

    2. Considered using Montero parts of similar age? This could net you lower gears like 4.625 or 4.875...

check with pick-n-pull. here in portland there are three 4x4 mm/d-50's with 4.22 gears. if you still haven't found a gear set yet, send me a pm and i could pull it for you and mail it.

Thanks for the offer PowerRam348, we only have one pic n pull here in Havasu and they don't have what I need. Kingman is an hour away and they have 3 or 4 places. I had to work today or I would have driven up. I will probably go there next Sat., but will keep you in mind! Thanks
