Imput shaft on trans? 89 2.6l

So I pulled the trans cause it needs a new clutch.
And me question is, is the input shaft supposed to have play in it?
    In/out and side to side?
Or does the pilot bearing pick up the slack?
And if it is bad, is it easy to replace or do I have to split the trans apart?

I'm waiting to replace my input shaft bearing, so this topic interests me. The bearing, I'm told, is an easy replacement without taking apart the transmission.

Clueless on the rest of your question, so hope someone with knowledge answers.

Ya it looks like there are 8 or so bolts holding the input shaft in there, if it's that easy I'll throw a new bearing and seal.
I'm already doing the rear main seal while the trans is out.

How is your center support bearing if you have a split driveshaft. Those big huge driveshaft center supports bearings things require grease lubrication fills just like a ball joint. Usually they are the culprit of a leaky trany tail shaft seal and also will irritate the differential front seal also.

It's a 1 piece drive shaft, there is no carrier bearing on it, there are also no leaks.
My only concern was the input shaft bearing, in the trans bell housing where the clutch disc slides on.

Easy to replace justin you will need the bearing and the gasket. Check rockauto.com. It should not have play in it.

How does this bearing come out? Is it pressed on the shaft?

I was told to take it to a transmission place and have them remove/install. I think it's one of those things where you need a specialty tool, but what's the point of buying a tool you'll use once?

I got my bearing through RockAuto and have it at the ready. Already talked to a shop about replacement, and they quoted one hour's fee - $70.

Well I already have about $8k in tools lol and my next tool will be a press.
So, do I have to split the trans apart or am I missing something to take this shaft out?
The bearing is free from the case but not the shaft, what about locking on the bearing with a slide hammer? And tapping the new one on?

Use a puller to remove and something like a pipe piece to put in the new one. Careful not to bend the bearing edges with pipe.

Would a slide hammer be bad if I'm just tapping it? Not railing on it!

K this pic from autozone shows a c clip on the back side of this bearing, so is that why it's not coming out?
And do I have to split the trans or does just the bell housing come off?

I wish I could help, Justin. I know nothing about these things.

Just being a voice of support. Those crickets get old after a while, I know.

    Warning.
If you remove the front shaft the pocket bearing will fall out.
It is made up of a bunch of long roller bearings. As soon as you pull the shaft out they will fall into the pan. They look just like the bearings in a "U" joint. The pocket bearing will normally fail when towing a trailer in 5Th gear as there is to much heat and not enough lube with the extra HP needed to pull a trailer.

    Q:
So how do you put it back together after it falls apart in your hand?

A: Now that you have removed it and you now have a pile of parts you need to put it back together some how. Well the trick is simple. Use grease. Just like you have in a "U" joint. The grease holds it together. But you must be very careful when putting it back together. They can fall out if pushed on to hard.
You can always look in the manual section at the first gen manual it will walk you through the process.

The input shaft and bearing will always have play in it when it's removed from the engine. The Pilot bearing holds the input shaft in alignment to the center line of the crank and helps keeps it from moving in and out of the trany. Unless it's leaking or is totaly wiped out and making noise it's normaly just fine.

I just found the post. I do have a business to run.
You can have it cheap, fast or good, so where does free come in?

Ok so I just tore into it, replaced the bearing and it comes out with a puller. It was so wore out that that when you hold the center of the bearing, it looked like a 2 tower cake!!! Ready to come apart. I think cause there was no pilot bearing as it had desintagraded long ago.
    Now it feels great!
And the clutch disc was so bad it could be used as a tambourine in a band lol! I've never seen a disc that wore out!
Replaced the rear main seal and
Installed the trans and put almost everything together, but it got late and all I have to do it put the shifter in, fill the trans fluid, tighten the front driveline and clutch cable!
Then I'll let you know how it runs!

Any problems with the pocket bearing? Or was it a cage type?
