still a project in progress, the body is an 83 mighty max but the engine is out of a mid 80s dodge d-50
and its a diesel (4d55) to gas swap 4g63, 4 speed stick, with a new carb. i have spark and its timed, but its still wont start just back firing and spitting out of the carb. checked the plugs, wires, idk i could use some ideas. im going to do a compression test this weekend and see.
silly question but do you have the distributor firing in the right direction? Can't remember if it's clockwise or counter clockwise but pull the cap and turn it over checking the direction the rotor is turning.Backfiring through the carb usually means the timing is way off or the firing order is wrong.
the Dis could also be out 180* so it's firing #4 not #1 which will cause it to backfire through the carb. Take the cap off, undo #1 plug, slowly turn the engine with a breaker bar on the crank bolt, Put a finger over the plug hole and when it push's your finger set it to the timing marks at 0* at that point. check rotor placement and see if its pointing at #1 or #4. I've been doing this for 30 years and even I get it wrong sometimes as the crank goes around twice to every once of the cam.
