Engine plating and finishing: Black chrome, nickel plate, powdercoating

I love the look of all three. Never liked chromed engines too much, too bling for my taste. But black chrome looks awesome and so does nickel. About how much does this cost? And how do they treat engine blocks with this stuff without getting the finish on the mating surface? I'd want to get this done *after* boring the block, right?

    I'm prepared for sticker shock...

nickel plating is the second step on a 3 step triple chrome plating process. not as durable as chrome, and not real practical for an engine block - doubt they want an engine block in their dip tanks
