engine removal 1st gen

Hey there..
This may sound like a total noob question, but I'm having my G54B rebuilt for my 1984 Ram 50 sport 4x4, and I need to take the engine out first.. Wondering if I can drop it through the bottom? Or does it need to be lifted out with a cherry picker? I know some trucks you can just drop the engine down and don't need the crane, so... Also, I'd really appreciate any one who has some good advice/experience taking these engines out. It's my first time!

Out the top, disconnect the trany and mounts and wires, lines and stuff. In our auto repair manuals section, you can download a complete manual to help you remove the motor. Use Air tools if you can, the 12 bolts on the Transmission Cross member will wear you out! and don't forget to disconnect the Speedo cable! (don't ask).

Well, it does prevent you from getting the Engine and tranny out until you disconnect it, it's a very tough cable.

I use an electric winch to pull the package and I was lifting the front of the truck with it.

Did you acid bath your engine and tranny Mike or is that paint?

Silver and Red paint after the block went thru the Hot tank and machining.

It started like this..


while waiting for various parts and pieces to arrive from the parts houses I cleaned and painted everything.

Then as it was assembled or I was waiting on something I'd got out the small paint brush and do the bolts in red.

No, the guys that built my Roll Cage made it. 1/4 inch steel, one off custom job. I don't have those skills or equipment.
