New to the forum and need some help!

Hey fellas, I have an 89' mighty and the balance shaft belt went out. Luckily for me the timing belt didn't go with it. I dug into it the other day and decided I'm going to do a balance shaft elimination kit. The one question I have though is why the truck won't run. I don't plan on driving it I just want to kick it over to make sure it's worth the work I plan on putting into it. As far as I understand the truck should still run without it. Is there a code or anything that gets thrown when the balance shaft goes out of time? If anyone can point me in the right direction to a thread I'd really appreciate it. Thanks and I look forward to being a part of this community!

You should check your timing to see if it was knocked off from the balance shaft belt. Check your compression as well. I would not delete it if it were mine, just change it accordingly and you should not have this problem. Also, welcome.

Hey thanks! Yeah I was thinking the timing got knocked out of whack when the balance shaft went out. I guess it's possible the broken belt went between the cogs on the timing belt and knocked it just out of whack a little bit. Luckily I don't think it knocked it out enough to bend any of the valves.. Time will tell. As soon as the parts are here I'll start the process.

You should replace both belts and probably the tensioners as well. Balance shaft belts rarely go out compared to the timing belts. There must of been something to cause the shaft belt to break and it probably was a balance shaft bearing race or tensioner seizing and stressing the belt out and breaking it. Check for a stiff balance shaft or tensioner up in the front of that engine so it doesn't happen again or something worse happens.

I'm eliminating the balance shaft so that belt won't be an issue. I'm going to run the truck for a while till I get my motorcycle built (so prob till next spring) then I'm going to pull the engine and take it to my buddy at the machine shop. We'll balance the rotating assembly then and bore it out a bit just to clean things up. Thanks again for the help/advice.

Haha yeah of course. This pic is actually not the MOST up-to-date. In the pic you can see the seat section is only a foam plug for my fiberglass. I have since been doing the finish shaping with bondo to get it ready for the fiberglass. Once the glass is laid I DEFINITELY forsee a leather seat in the future. She's not quite built for comfort though so I can't say it will feel much better with a seat haha.

Yes, I seen that. My cousin raced scrambles and had a seat like yours, though he was never on bike for more then 5-10 minutes at a time. You better pad your tank too if you want to keep all your teeth with those handlebars. Sort of reminds me of the Yamaha RD's
