Auto Hub Removal
I've got a first gen, 1985 4wd diesel Dodge d-50, and I'm trying to remove the front axles. The Chiltons manual is useless.
I need to remove the auto locking hubs. There's a silver cap on it that says AUTO Hub, and 6 allen head bolts. The silver cap doesn't appear to want to come off, and when I loosen all the allen bolts, it doesn't come off either.
Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks

I think once the bolts are off it only had an O ring in there holding it in place.

The cap that says Auto Hub unscrews from the hub body. You'll need a set of channel locks or a rubber oil filter wrench to unscrew the cap if the grease is all dried up. Inside the hub body is a C clip fixed to the end of the CV shaft. Once the C clip is pulled and the 6 hub bolts removed, the hub body slides off the CV shaft. Once you have the hubs off, either clean them really good and relube all the workings, or replace them with Aisin manual hubs (also available new from plh at 4x4Wire/Pirate/MightyD50.

If you need to go as far as replacing the rotors or further, you will need a spindle lock nut wrench. Just an FYI. They're kinda hard to find and I couldn't find an alternative/Micky Mouse sort of way to do it.
Found one on EBay last year for $4. Absolute Gold.
You can get Mitsubishi manual hubs from Tuf Pans, as well.
