    4M40/41 swaps?

    Has anyone seen this done? The 2.8/3.2 engines put out almost 300 tq which is 2x what our 4d5's do. The motor mounts look the same also. I'm thinking it can be done pretty easily.

    Problem is sourcing one, all of them were or are sold outside of the US. that's why I was hoping maybe one of our comrades from Canada since they would be the closest could do some research on availability. Say from any late model Pajero's or L200's maybe (hint) (hint).

    Thats a minor issue. Theres one on ebay right now and theres a few on jdm engine sites. Theyre aall hooked to a 4x4 a/t. That being said im curious if itll hook to our 5 speed m/ts. Theyre alot easier to find parts for than the 4d5 engines and wont need any modifications to make these little trucks fast. Im just wondering what would be involved to do the swap before dumping 2500 on a engine from japan.

    That I do not know, it might be easier to try and use everything motor, tranny, t-case if wanted and just graph into our trucks.

    That may be true but my first gens are both m/t not a/t and I'd really like to go for a 2wd for a sporty street truck not really an off road warrior. I haven't seen anything for m/t or 2wd on these engines yet.

    That might be because; if I'm not mistaken they were only put into Pajero and L200 in 4x4 config. I could be wrong.

    There was a 5 speed option but all 4wd. However my 4d5 is 4x4 but tailshaft is swappable between it and my 2wd. Could be the same case here.

    They are swappable but not without the two wheel parts needed like complete 2wd output shaft fifth/reverse gear and synchronizer ass. Here I posted on thread about some of the difference, check it out. http://www.mightyram50.net/vbulletin...45-Tranny-Info

    Makes sense. Maybe the trans is the same for the 2 diesels. If not I could make an adapter plate. I've got a 2wd 2.6L and 4wd diesel 5-speeds in both my donors. I intend to take the diesel (4wd) and swap the tailshaft from the 2wd and make a 2wd diesel and see what MPG I can get from it. So I'll need to swap the guts from the 2wd into the 4wd trans housing and swap tailshafts?

    your better off running the 4wd internals thicker cut gears for more contact area in theory making them stronger and run the 2wd tail shaft assembly

    The bellhousing is definitely different (larger on the 4M4x compared to the 4D5x/2.6L).

    I looked into this a while back, because I wanted to drop a 4M40 in my '84 when my 4D died. If only I had the money (my car has me so broke its not funny), I'd pick up another 1st Gen (no longer want to do the 4M40 in my '84) and pick up a 4M40 / 5-Speed / Transfer Case to put in it.

    What about 2wd? On the 4m4 trans Can the transfer case of the 4x4 be changed and swapped with a 2wd tailshaft like our other trucks?

    i have a 94 mighty max 3.0 4x4 5spd im wanting to get more power out of thinking of going with 6g74 or 4m40 an suggestions as far as difficulty and avalibility of resources

    You've got a 3.0 go with some stealth or 3000gt VR4 turbo heads and some good turbos

    I don't know. I only ever researched it a little bit, to see if a 4M40 would fit my existing 4WD Diesel 5-Speed. I imagine it would be possible IF the 4M40 also uses a KM145 / KM145D Transmission (I forget what the 2WD versions were called, the 4WD was KM145 for the 2.0/2.6 and KM145D for the 4D55) like the 2.0/2.6 & 4D55 did. I imagine they used a stronger transmission with the 4M4x engines.

    In a worst case scenario, you could always use a different/common 2WD transmission with an Adapter. The AX-15 (found in Jeeps and Dodge Dakotas) is popular with the Mercedes 5-Cylinder Diesel Swap Crowd, guys make adapters (a flat plate with a matching flywheel spacer) to fit them to the Jeep & Dodge Bellhousings

    Well with the better power output of these engines I could probably keep it 4wd and not worry about the extra weight

    are you serious ? im a newb I don't know a whole lot about these trucks im just now starting to get into the motor an drive train

    Yeah the 3.0 in our trucks is the same as the stealth/3000GT. You can get a computer from a VR4 and some DOHC heads with turbo's then slap an intercooler on it and such and make that truck super fast and for pretty cheap and little mods. I'm not sure what other sensors the FWD will have over the RWD. Gota do some research since you'll need the turbo ECM. V6 trucks are the rarest. I've got a 2.4, 2.6 and 2.3 TD engines. The v6 is the only one I haven't done much with but I work on 3000GTs at work from time to time when the independents can't fix them so I know a little about em

    The 4M40 and 4M40 use the same bell housing bolt pattern as the 3.0l V6 gasser. Being this bellhousing is removable from the transmission in the M/T version, an adapter plate can be fabricated to mount up stronger gear boxes.
