Are you sure it's a narrow block? The 2.6 is a wide block. Narrow is 4 speed.

Well I have a 5 speed, but what kind of Trans is it? Like a km 132? Or what? It's a 2.6 5 speed. 1984 I'm not sure now if it is a wide or narrow.

It should be the km 132. any 5 speed will work 2wd or 4wd. all you do is swap over the tail shaft. We have a vin decoder in the Wiki or tech section. It's around somewhere

On the firewall there is a info plate that will have your tranny code on it. I want to say you'll have a km145 but it could be a km132.

he's got a 84 first gen so it should be the 132. MoparJa is the resident expert in swapping parts between them. He just finished up his 4wd rebuild out of 2wd parts. The main thing to keep an eye out on is the détent balls and shuttles. There different sizes and if you don't put them in the correct place you can shift into 2 gears at the same time.

here is my vin for reference: JB7FK44E4Y402338

I decoded my vin and found a few problems/questions... 2nd number is a B which is not an option, is that because it was mitsubishi made FOR dodge?
Next is number 5, what does it mean by series? I have a high series?

Number 7 is body type which doesn't have any options for a truck? Mine says 4 which is a 4 door or 3 door wagon?

Number 9 was Check digit? Mine is a 4 but what does that mean?

and finally number 12 is my transmission it says 4, which is 4 speed 4+4 man fed but I have a 5 speed manual and a 4 wheel drive manual. Does that mean I have a tranny swap? incorrect vin? Would my vin be on my transmission also?

    and the rest I got

    Thanks for the help guys.

Whoops your a first gen. look in the manual section and download the vin and info of the first gen factory manual. It should be in there.

    If it's a 5 speed it's a km132.
    The 4 speed is a km130

I am obviously having problems with this! I can not decode it with using the link in the manual section for a 1st gen. the 2nd gen gave me more info. oh well, at least I know that I have a km132 lol that is the only thing I was really worried about. I am pulling it from the truck tomorrow and hopefully exchanging the gears from the mazda.

THANK YOU CAMOIT FOR ALL YOUR HELP! I am truly happy to be back on this forum!

on the trany bell housing there is a stamped number. once you get it we can figure it out from there. My manual is a 1980 book. we need to buy later ones and turn them into PDF for people. once the board sells the headers it has we can do that. Then it will have a small surplus to work with.

So can I swap in a 2wd trans into a 4wd truck if I swap out the tail shafts? My father said something like I have an integrated transfer case so does that mean I would swap out the 2wd tail shaft with my 4wd transfer case? Or how would that work?

yes the trannies are the same except for the tailshaft - they are a direct swap.

I talked with MoparJa. He said it was the transfer case detents that are the impotent ones. But all the parts will swap over.

    Hello,
I'm new here and trying to figure out what transmission I have. I have used the vin lookup in the sticky section and have called dodge but none of the info I am given has matched up. I have a 1985 Ram 50 with the g54b engine. It is 4wd and a 5 speed which is where the vin decoder doesn't work. It tells me that I have a 4 speed man fed transmission. I THINK i have a KM132 or a KM145 based on the reading I am doing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

Hi and welcome to Mightyram. It will be a KM-145 transmission (2.6 engine). The irritating thing with the Gen 1 trucks is the chassis number is on the end of the frame somewhere under the rear tray. If you have a tow hitch mounted to it, the hitch brackets cover it. This is usually the VIN the dealers want (if they can even know what your truck is and have access to the model data)
