    1984 MMM Diesel driveline "whine"

have an 84 diesel mm with 5 speed 180k miles. Shifts real nice but there's a pretty loud gear sounding whine in the driveline during acceleration -- especially in 1st and 2nd ... no whine sound during coast or deceleration. need to figure out if it's rear end or trans ... any ideas? any tips on how to figure out where it's coming from?

If its only in 1st and 2nd then its probly worn gears. You can have sombody stick their ear to the floor when you accelerate. If it was the rearend, then you will hear it all the time, uinless its a loose pinion, then you will most likely hear it during deceleration.

input shaft bearing shot - if you drop the tranny and grab the shaft - if it moves like a spoon in a mixing bowl - there's your problem. AKA dough mixer
