Check the gear oil level in the tranny - it may be low. Otherwise, it could be a bad bearing on the shaft for 5th gear, bad syncro or debris in the teeth of the gear. For it to be the throwout bearing, all gears would do it. Actually, drop the pan on the tranny and see what you find.

Main input shaft bearing failure - my 85 did the same thing just before the bearings exploded in the tranny. Stop driving it and drop the pan to see if it ruined the case.

is that gear oil or metal on the teeth - its hard to tell. Was there metal shavings on the pan or in the oil?

It could be the pilot bearing in the end of the crank is toast. It will cause all kinds of problems if it's bad. Then you can destroy the input shaft bearings. Sorry to say it, but I would pull the trans and replace the clutch and inspect the shaft and make sure the trany bearings are not bad. The input shaft should move around some but not a lot.

I second that - once you get the tranny out grab the input shaft and see how much play there is - I'm betting alot, aka dough mixer.
