6g72 Replacement Options
Hi,
I have a '90 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 4x4 5 speed with the 3.0 V6. I had it rebuilt with new heads, new oil pump, cylinders honed, new bearings etc, but a few days after getting it back on the road it was overheated and now has a bottom end knock.
I am planning on a replacement. Can someone tell me what are my replacement choices? What engines will bolt right in with the existing 5 speed and motor mounts? What engines will bolt in but would need a donor ECU? Does the 2.6 4 cylinder use the same trans bell-housing? Does a 3.0 V6 from a front-wheel drive work? (If I swap the mounts/exhaust manifolds etc)?
In other words, what are my options?
I have read someone recommending Toyota 22 RE install ??? Is that an option? ( I used to have a 4 Cyl Raider, and I didn't mind the power output.)
I have searched the site for compatibility chart etc. If I missed it, can you point me to it please. Thanks for your help.

It's pretty much on me. My son drove the truck when it was hot. The mechanic was doing the work out of his garage as a side job. He will probably assist with labor by pulling the engine and help the install of a new one.
Would the newer 3.5 L V6 work in my truck? Or a 3.0 L from a front wheel drive?

The 3.0 fwd from a 3000gt will bolt up, I'm doing the 6g72t in my truck.

I have the Diamante 3.0 in my '91 4x4 MM and it's great. It's a higher compression engine, so it clearly has more power than the original and gets better gas mileage. The best I ever got with the original was just over 20 mpg but I have gotten 24 with the Diamante version. I picked up one of the "Imported Low Mileage Engines" and needed to swap a few parts from my original but am using the original ecu. I would highly recommend going this route.

Thanks for the replies.
Was the Diamante engine a DOHC or SOHC motor? (B code or S code?)
Do you remember what year?
Are you using a stock manual trans also?
Or do you have an automatic?
Thanks again. I am trying to post a pic of my truck too.

I have a 5 speed manual and I believe the motor is a SOHC, '93 or 94. I got my truck with a blown engine for $200., (run without oil), and I found this motor on CL. The guy that had it bought it to put in his Montero but it got totaled while parked in front of his house a day or two before he was going to install it. He kept it for a couple of years looking for a truck needing an engine but couldn't find any so he put it on CL for BO. I got it for a $100! It had a little surface rust but still had the import tags on it. All it needed was to have the injectors cleaned and it runs great. Your truck body looks in great shape so I wouldn't hesitate replacing the engine. Good luck!
