tailgate handle relocator
just curious to see if anyone knows if a tailgate handle relocator kit is made for our trucks. id like to move mine and im having a hard time finding one. any help is appreciated
-
Nope, none are made I've looked. Going to have to get one for a toyota, nissan or mazda and adapt it to work, that's what i plan on doing.
-
what about using a different tailgate? if it matches up?
-
Geronimo's was made using an inside door handle and adapted it to pull the rods to open the latches. Then cut the outer handle out and made a piece from an old door and welded it in. The handle is from a 1st gen door.
-
arent the 1st gen tail gates different from the 2nd?
-
-
i thought so. i didnt think that the 1st gen had the big access panel that the 2nd gens do
-
It does have an access panel - its about 6-8" tall and the width of the tailgate, and right behind the outside handle. 2nd gen should be able to be done the same way.
-
is there any way that i could get a picture of yours? id like to see how you did it.
-
I will try and get those pics for you - I will post them for all to see.
-
thank you sir. im curious to see how you did it.
-
im gonna do that myself and use one old tail gate to cut out the piece needed for a filler, i did one on my old mazda. Used a 85 toyota inside door handle and modified the bars a little and that was it
-
pennyman any luck with those pics?
-
Will try to get them friday when I am off.
-
-
Sorry for the delay - the pics are coming, in the middle of reorganizing the garage right now.
-
i completely forgot about asking about the handle.
-
-
like Christmas, they're coming

Look for trkdesigner's post on the tailgate handle flip - he is my painter extrordinaire and the one who came up with the mod; he is taking pics of the mod on his 81 arrow truck that I posted on here previously.
-
Thinking of taking this on again. I will post pics once I get started.
-
I ran a cable from the piece that the handle attaches to down to the bottom of the tailgate through the hole and put a T handle on it. YOu cant see it but you can reach up under the "lip" of the tailgate at the bottom and it will pop open.

I sketched out an idea for a hands free tailgate using a door popper and two leftover gas shocks for my old BMW's hood but nothing ever came of it.
