any transmission people in the house?

I have a 89 4x4 w/ the 2.6 I bought it with a bit of a transmission problem. All of the gears work on it with no problem, however when in neutral there is no stop to keep the shiftier from going past first and second gear to the left into what i like to call 'no-mans land' does that make any sense to anyone at all?? any ideas of what could be going on? I am completely lost when it comes to transmission issues. Thanks for any help!

The shift gate is missing or broken. If you pull the shifter out there should be a diamond shape plate under it with a bent tab. Look in the manual section under the first gen factory manual. Then look at the transmission. There will be a picture that will help. Or the plastic bushing that goes in the cup is gone.

If the shifter ball breaks or crumbles, it can do that. Or if the shifter unbolts from the tranny completely like mine did once in traffic in the middle of an interstate...

That would really suck A**. Well I just got back from the good ol' junkyard with a whole new-to me shift assembly, waiting on the gasket kit to get to Napa, hopefully it'll be there tomorrow so i can get this thing fixed up.

    Thanks again for the help.

Ok so i ventured out into this crazy South Carolina heat today to take a look at the thing in my truck. I pulled out the shift assembly and everything seems to look good, or as good as the replacement one I got. The stopper plate was in good shape, all the bushings looked to be in good shape and even the rubber boots look pretty good. So at this point im thinking about going back to the junkyard and just grabbing the transmission off the 86 ram 4x4 they have up there for $50, just sucks its so damn hot!

any more ideas before I go snag the transmission?

Before doing anything else take a look at 3,4,5,6,16,17,18,19 and make sure they are all there, and in good shape. This is what keeps your shifter from flopping around

You might find more info in the manual ans source info section. Look in the over 216 manual thread. There is a Haynes manual that may cover the transfer case.

I would grab that tranny and transfer case even if you don't need it - its worth much more than 50 bucks and it will insure the current problem will be minor due to having a spare
