The progress. good news guys. well kinda...

so we got her running!! got a new water pump, oil pump, finally bought a parts truck that had my much needed water pump pulley and the fan. its a clutch fan but its still a fan. so we got her all started. but my brand new thermostat isn't opening so my motor is just heating up. or it's not reading on my gauge right. but here is the problem, it won't shut off. i turn the key off and she stays running, barely, but she is running. what could be the problem? my dad thinks it is the butterfly valve on the carb or some rod that goes thru my idle arm thru the carb? i have no idea what i'm even saying right now lol any ideas? pics coming as soon as it is done.

Dieseling? like the smog cars of the 80's on cheap gas? I used to have to shut off my company car in gear (automatic) to get it to stop. basically it's detonation, and especially if it's hot!

Also Check your timing, if it to advanced you can have that problem as well. A vaccume leak can also cause that problem as well. I was going to say an electric fan will back feed with out a relay and keep the ignition system running till the fan stops but as you said its a clutch fan it won't be that.

excessive carbon bui;dup in the cylinders will also cause dieseling -run redline synthetic fuel system cleaner - whole bottle into 1 tank of gas then run till almost empty

First I would direct you to the first gen factory manual, The info in there will help. Look at the trouble shooting flow tree on carb setting. You need to preform a lean set. That is the butterfly's are open to far. Start the truck turn OUT the idle mix screw, (RPM goes up) then turn the idle speed screw down (rpm goes down), then turn in the mix screw to where it wants to stall, (rpm goes down and she shakes like a dog) Now turn up the idle speed screw just a touch to bring it back to 750 rpm. That should fix the run on. OH Then check the timing. repeat if necessary.

bought a new weber. we'll see if that helps. maybe it was just getting too much air? who knows. if not, i'll try what you guys said. and my timing is all onspot.
