1987 Dodge D-50 from Minnesota

Hi guys. I just got my new-to-me D-50 a few days ago and I'm having some issues getting it to run smoothly. The idle is rough and high, the truck stumbles at low throttle openings, and generally runs really rich. I know my way around motorcycle carbs, but this is my first carbureted car/truck. As a preliminary check I looked over all the vacuum lines I could see, and all looks good. Any ideas?

Welcome to the board. We will all try to guide you to a better running truck.

First off if you have a timing belt,,, change it.... And the counter shaft belt. Then drop in an O2 sensor if it's on there, and see how it does. The choke could be having some problems or the float is to high. I would first turn in the idle mix screw in just a tad. It will take some time to get her running good but there easy to work on. OH and start to track your gas mileage.

Which is the idle mix screw?

Take a look in the manual section and find the first gen manual. It will give you an idea of what it what on them. There is also a couple of posts on them. You can find them in the general maintenance area if I remember correctly. But in the manual section you will find a boat load of PDF manuals.

Actually he has a second gen Ram 50 and needs to look in the 2nd gen manuals as the carbs are much different from 86 to 87.

I've got a Chilton manual for 79-93. Are there any known issues with it?

Good for a start - better than haynes - the factory manual is still the best, though none are 100% correct.
