Going to put a Conquest head on my '80 2.6l (Turbo, injection, and all)

I found a cheap donor car to hopefully solve my parts woes on my 80 Arrow Sport. I am going to keep a build thread going over at my website, but I'll keep you guys updated too.

So far, all I've done is start carefully labeling all the electrical connections in the engine compartment. I am not looking for huge horsepower, but a little extra pep and reliability.

oh an 88 interco0led starion had 190 hp.

No matter how good the car runs, either replace the 2 injectors and connectors, or go to the multiport injection setup - the starquest stock injection system had issues with the boost injector clogging and frying the motor due to lean out, and failing connectors also causing problems. The red 1980 sport model seems to be the one that survived the most in the eastern salt belt. Great to see another 1980 on the forum - mine was the black sport with the 4 color block stripes originally, but when the cab rotted out, I used a 1980 red sport cab to replace it. i also have parts for a 1987 conquest TSI I parted out, including all electronic modules. It suffered motor lockup due to the silent shaft chain on the oil pump coming off because the slack was not adjusted out of the chain.

Does anyone know the differences between the Starion 5 speed and the Arrow 5 speed? My Arrow has an auto (I hate autos) and the Conquest has a 5 speed with a brand new clutch. I'd like to swap the tranny in while I'm at it.

I think I read somewhere that the tailshaft is different? I can't seem to find the post though.

The tail shaft is approx. 3" longer. Switch one from a truck and it should work no problem

Would you look at that. It's my truck before the camo paint. Including the hanging ding-A-ling rubber strip. I found that "Liquid Nail" from Home Depot works for 20+ years to hold it back in place. 1 shot of that stuff and a chunk of duct tape for a day or two is good for years. Just make sure to squeeze some out of the fresh tube on some cardboard first. The first little bit is no good. It's all clear no glue. After the first inch it's good to go. Works good on wood to.

the starquest 5 speed tailshaft is different than the arrow 5 spd, as it moves the shifter back 4" they do interchange easily. The starquest trannies have bigger shafts and bearings, especially the intercooled ones, but the input and output shafts are the same. Also realize that the 1980 2.6 auto block is a narrow block 12.5" spacing and the starquest 5 speed spacing is 13.25" and uses a hydralic clutch

Whaaaa? That both sucks and is awesome at the same time. It is awesome because I have been looking for a reason to change over to the manual, but sucks because it eliminates the possibility of the auto.

Where is that 12.5" spacing measured?

It is measured across the lower two bell housing bolts. If you have a narrow block then you will need a narrow block tranny, and vice versa

I thought the 80 2.6L is a wide block and the 2.0L is narrow. My 2.6 was a wide block. You can also look in the wiki under history for more on blocks.

up to 87 the 2.6 auto blocks are narrow, the 5 spds are wide. 83 - 86 2.0 are all narrow blocks.
