Malfunctioning gas gauge
When the gas gauge on my '90 gets to about a quarter tank left, it slowly starts to creep up to over a half. Since my trip meter has never worked since I got the truck, I have to keep an eye on the odometer and refill after 225 miles, which is fine when I remember my previous mileage. Any advice on how the gas gauge works and what could be the issue?

Inside the tank is a float that connects to a wiper arm that runs up and down a resistance wire. The wire is worn through and broken. You need a new sending unit.

Thanks, Camoit. So I take it the tank needs to be dropped or can the sending unit be accessed with the tank in place?

Tank has to be dropped, not that bad of a chore. Drain it first! (there is a drain Plug)
