timing chain & oil pump

1987 2.6 4x4 auto transmission

My oil pressure has decreased. Oil light comes on when oil is heated up at idle. Later temperature goes up. Will overheat if continue to run. I changed thermostat and water pump. Still heats up but not as quick. I tooktruck to mechanic to fix. I want to change oil pump. Seems like big job. They said preventative maintenance on timing chain is not required but oil pump is probably problem and they will replace. Anything else I should replace while oil pump is replaced? Should I have timing chain replaced? I do not think timing chain has Ben replaced andtruck is nearly 200k miles.

yes replace everything you can while you have it apart .Chain kit ,water pump etc

I replaced wate pump. What's in timing chain kit? I'll ask for them to do timing chain as well. Anything else?

The timing chain kit has new chains,new gears new chain guides assuming your motor is chain and not belt. I did mine at 194K , everything was wornout.

Oil pumps are not so bad. Think of it as exploration for other possible engine stoppers. Usually when engine gets hot, the water isn't doing it's job to carry heat away. Not saying oil pressure isn't the cause. My other car has low gauge pressure readings and pressure is actually fine. The oil sensors are capable of reading wrong and displaying it.

It indeed heats up. The water nearly boils out. The fan is spinning all the time.

check the rad to see if the core is plugged by looking down into the filler neck. If its cruddy, it can cause the engine to overheat.

Look into the radiator fill spot?

yes - you can see the tubes that run up and down that the coolant flow through.

Well I had the mechanic replace the oil pump and timing chain. It still overheats. I don't see a clog in the radiator fill cap area. Any idea what I should try now?

Coolant system flush, check radiator cooling fins the AIR side for bent fins, bugs, dirt, debris should be able to see light through them and check to make sure fan is close enough to radiator maximum distance away about 1.5 inches without shroud.
