Swapping gauge clusters
So I've got a 1980 D-50 Sport parts donor for my truck, and I want to swap the gauge cluster from it into my '86 Power Ram as the Sport has a tach and the Power Ram doesn't. So I made the swap but the tach doesn't work. Is this perhaps because the pins on the ring-like plug are different? Do I have to swap over all of that part of loom if I want this cluster?

That link does not apply to him as he has a 1st gen and that thread is for 2nd gen trucks.
You will have to wait til one of the 1st gen guys gets on and see this as I have no idea about their gauges.

Yeah, I tried that stuff and it didn't work. I think it might be the right direction though as the truck I took the cluster off of has a wire coming off the negative terminal on the coil that the other doesn't have but it goes into the loom and I can't trace it.
Oh, and my new cluster

it should work without changing anything on a 1st gen - only difference would be no 4wd light. You could also just swap the tach into the 86 power ram cluster to see if it works then. Also check the solder joints on the 80 cluster before the tach swap. You will have to swap the speedo into the 80 cluster, as the speedos have different speed ranges and would read way off, about 15 mph off on the 80 speedo in an 86.
