Just wondering if anyone has swapped in the tbi system from lets say an 89 MM into an 86 MM while keeping the same engine in place. My smog teacher mentioned this to me as i was having trouble with the mikuni carb and said it was possible and legal if I took the ECU, wiring harness, all the emission stuff and tbi. Not sure if I would also need the intake manifold but I been going to the junk yards and every time I look at a MM or a D-50 they are always stripped.

As far as I know D50's are EFI, not TBI, You would have to get the injector rails and manifold also, but I am not an EFI guy so I dont know too much. If your truck is a 2.0 you would get parts off of a 90's 2.4l truck, for the 2.6 I don't have any Idea as I want to swap my 2.6 to EFI

Not to my knowledge, but you might be on to something if you can make it work. TBI would be the easy way to go. I do know there are some after market TBI set ups for Ford, Chevy V6 and V8 engines. I don't know why it can't be done. Just smaller injectors. TBI it the easy way to go. Less things to work with and more reliable in my mind. The only reason they went to multi port is to increase fuel mileage and reduce emissions, Government mandate..
as long as it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, was going to go to ecology and mess around to see what fits and doesn't fit but ended up helping out a friend put his tranny back in his toyo. oh well. next weekend I'll go and mess around with the idea of tbi and pfi
Do you have a 2.0(g63b) or the 2.6(g54b). From everything I've read and from a few people I've talked to the 2.0 and 2.4(fuel injected 4g64) have the same heads. I know FOR A FACT they use the same valve covers as I swapped my polished one from my 2.0 onto my buddies 2.4 and its common knowledge they use the same exhaust manifold

So I looked up the intake manifold gaskets and they BOTH use the same intake manifold gasket at the head. So what this means is IF YOU HAVE A 2.0L(g63b) then YES you can swap it to fuel injection.
What you will need from a 2.4L(4g64) truck:
intake manifold and all related accesories/sensors/injectors/fuel rail. You will also need the MAF(mass airflow sensor) and the ECU and engine wiring harness. Also the o2 sensor. There might be an item or two I forgot.
That should convert your truck to fuel injection, unless you have a g54b(2.6l) in which you will need to find all those items from a mitsubishi starion/conquest with a (tbi)g54b
Yes even the 2.4 head will bolt on the 2.0 block. I had an 86 2.0 carbed block with 2.4 efi head in my 90 max for a while.
cool, great info. I have the haynes manual here and the intake manifold did look like it would bolt straight on. That's probably the route I am going to go then. Getting 15 mpg with my carb at the moment. I seen that the rebuild kits are cheap enough but they look to be missing the grommets for the all the linkages.

Its not the easiest task to accomplish. There is a lot of wiring to go fuel injected. Also need a new fuel pump for the higher pressure. If youre unhappy with the mikuni carb then ditch it for a weber. Seems like thats what everyone else does anyways.
I have seen on yotatech, a Toyota Pickup forum, that someone converted the popular 22R to a TBI using a 2 barrel TBI off of a smaller V6 chevy pickup and reprogrammed the computer to work with the 22R
I have a 80s vintage holley projection single bbl setup off a friends jeep with the 4.2 I6 that I thought of using on the project truck until I got the weber from L.K. When I start on the 86 I will decide which I am going to use
not intimidated by the wiring, will probably go with the weber for now and then go with the pfi once I scrape up some moneyQuote:

no he didn't convert to fuel injection but he did convert it to the EDIS setup
Well you say you have a 2.0. I think a Bosch k jetronic set up would;d be kind of cool to put on. It's a simple system and theres no real computer to deal with. Just an O2 sensor. They have deferent size injectors for different size engines. Some light machine work on the intake for the injectors and thread in adapters. And best of all you can get the hole system real cheap off a VW Rabbit or Jetta. Now this could work, and it would would be a first for a truck like this. I love the system, there so simple. All that ever goes wrong is the fuel pump relay or the injector O rings would crack and make a vacuum leek.

Yes you can more than likely do a simple TBI swap from a chevy V6, I found a thread on Pirate4x4 where a guy converted his 22R to a TBI 22r, although I am going to convert my carbed Toyota to EFI I am going to use the EFI off of a 1988 4runner, anyway, that wont help you but here is a link to the forum and just scroll down until you find it, I have both a 2.6l Ram 50 and a 2.4l 22R Toyota, and there are alot of similarities between the two (Besides the intake and exhaust manifolds are on different sides) or I would put my 22R into my now blown up D-50
