I've a '90 Ram 50, 2.4L, Base model. Should I move up to a 75amp (I think it is) alternator from the 45amp I guess is in there now? Any disadvantages? And what steps can I take to ensure that I'm sent the the correct alternator (everything fits) when I'm ordering my new alternator.

You can get an alternator from a starquest ( 75 - 100 amp) expo van (75 amp) or later monteros (75 and up)
Though it may not be a direct bolt on, for my 4G63 I used one off of a first gen eclipse, if memory serves I looked it up for a 1990 2.0l (not sure if all that matters).
Models that pennyman suggested weren't available without UPS shipping at the Napa where I worked (and could freely play with alternators), but the 1G DSM alternator was just a few hours away.
I needed buy a super long bolt and make my own spacers, but it works well, has the same electrical plug, and is comes in 65 or 75 amp depending on whether it's for an auto trans. Also you have to swap the pulley if you're running v-belts.
I just got my truck back and I believe the alternator is done.
i was planning on swapping it for a Mitsubishi van 75amp alternator, but no one has it in stock!
I dont like like the idea of using the external regulator and bigger Dodge Ram alternator.
i was going to take my alternator to the auto store to compare with a late model Montero alternator.
can anyone confirm that the late model montero alternator is an option?? Specifically which year , model ( montero or montero sport) and engine?
FYI the montero sport v6 3.0 alternator does not work with the 2.0 g63b. The lower mount works, but the upper tension bolt does not align. You would need to fashion a longer bracket for it to work.

I ended up ordering the 75 amp alternator for the van....hopefully it truly is a bolt in upgrade.
Dunno how useful this info will be, but the 3000GT alternator goes up to 110 amps for the VR4s and the loaded SL models. It doesn't look like it'd be a bolt-on swap for the 4 cylinders, but maybe it's possible to shoehorn the 3000GT guts into a 4 cylinder alternator casing.
For anyone looking to power a whole lot of stuff, the Evo X alternator is 130 amps.
The 75 amp Mitsubishi van alternator was a direct fit and awesome upgrade for the same price as the factory 45 amp replacement

The alternator is only a direct fit to the '87 and up Trucks. They changed the connector after '86. Though the '86 connector can be changed to be like the later years. When replacing stock with the Mitsubishi VAN or the StarionQuote:

That's the exact one I purchased.
If all else fails, you can swap pulleys if the body of alternator fits.
I took the old pulley off and turned the alternator in as a core without the pulley.

Hey guys! I know this is an old thread but my alternator died and I so I just found one of these Mits Van alternators from Orielly. I will try and install it tonight since my truck is daily driver. I hope it works and will post results!

I installed the alternator and used the new pulley since it looked like the old one. But when i revved the engine the belt squealed. I had to go back to orielly to get the old pulley. After i got it back on, I hooked up the multimeter and got 14V. I ran down the freeway and it seemed like everything is working. I had to tap the sleeve to make it fit on the pivot. Another option is to adapt a AC Delco 10si or 12si. I was able to do so on my G54B with a couple of spacers and brackets I made up. Still uses the same v belt. It's nothing fancy. I did also have to do a little cut and weld on the upper radiused bracket. The reason I went this route is that they are cheap (mine was $45 plus 15 if no core), reliable, and you can break down anywhere and get a replacement alternator. They are almost always in stock. Many of your extra high output alternators are based on the cases from these.
I found this web page to have a lot of good info on the Delco alternators, and used it to find the one I wanted.

Have the same Delco alternator on Geronimo, with beefed up internals. The alternator to use is a small case 10si/12si for a Buick / Oldsmobile. 105 amp output for the base alternator.
I am running the one for an 87 Chrysler Conquest/Mitsu. Starion. I believe it is 75 amps.
Does the Montero have the same size shaft. I found a decent priced 110 amp alternator on eBay. I read somewhere that they do. But don't know if any specific year.
That's a negative. Now I can't find a pulley to fit the Montero alternator.
They do not have the same size shaft. I had to bore out the center hole on the 2 discs (the pulley is 2 pieces). And then find a different bushings to go behind the pulley. And it seems to be fine. On a tight budget, so I had to use what I had. Just updating, If anyone else is looking to go with the Montero alternator on the 4g64.
The Montero alternator does NOT work. I tried putting it on last night. It doesn't fit. Now I've spent $75 that I didn't have on an alternator that I can't use. somewhere in these forums, someone said they did work. And they don't. So don't waste your time with one. I've screwed myself with it. And won't be able to drive my truck for a couple months now because of it.
In what way does it not fit out of curiosity?

Is it an alternator out of a V6 Monty? That is a bad blow dude, sorry to hear it's set you back like that. I still think a Hyundai alternator will work so I'm gonna hit the far, far away land of U-Pull-It to verify one from a J series engine will work on a 4 cylinder Mitsu engine. Yeah it's one out of a 3.5 liter. The ones older than 98 have a different top bracket. That one, I think will work. It also has a different positive terminal location.
Does anyone have a picture of of the 10si installed? I'm trying to get a different alternator and I want one that's gonna fit this time. I've got the 4g64, so idk how different they are. But I won't be able to make any brackets for it to make it work. So a direct bolt on that has a good price is my only option. Getting a different pigtail won't be a problem tho. Thank you!Quote:

I didn't take a photo of it installed, I can do that later today. The wiring, i just cut the pigtail off of the 2 wires on the factory harness, and crimped on 2 spade terminals. You can buy 10/12si pigtails for just a few bucks to make it look a little nicer.
I was able to retain the stock size fan belt also.

Ideally the lower bracket could have a connecting link so that the front and back are always clocked the same in relation to the timing cover. I was in a rush to get it back on the road so its 2 pieces plus 2 spacers. Crude, but It's been on there for over 50K miles with no problem

Hmm, I wonder how different it is on my truck. I'll find out tonight. I hope I don't have to do any special brackets for it. I just want to be able to drive my truck again. Lol
Ahhh, I mixed this up with another thread. You don’t have a g54b. If you can fit one, 10si’s are everywhere and cheap
My top bracket is plenty long. So I don't think I'll have to modify that. But after raising it higher and putting brackets on the bottom, does it still adjust good, so you have a nice and tight belt? The brackets look really simple tho.
my bottom pivot moved up about an inch. It's been raining pretty good the last few days, i'll get a picture soon of it installed. Belt is plenty tight. I stuff a prybar between the front engine cover (with a rag on the end) and alternator and just gently pull it it a bit to get it tight. I may have had to offset the upper bracket forward a bit.
My Falcon has a 10si, my ram50 has one, and the f250 will get one. The availability, reliability, and power output are worth the effort in my opinion. I bought 2, and warrantied one, and they were always in stock at the auto zone. They are also the go to alternator for agricultural equipment. Pretty much any old tractor you see that has been converted to 12v or just gotten a new alternator, i can almost guarantee it's a 10si. Parts will always be readily available for them
I ended up going the starion route. It was a direct bolt on for the 4g64. (for anyone else having the same problem I had trying to find one that works.) I just need to get a new belt. Since the top bracket is in a different position, it makes the pulley closer to the engine. I put the old one I had on it for now to see how well it worked. My old alternator was putting out 12.6 volts. This one is putting out 14.6. So I won't have to worry about it not charging the battery well enough. ��
