I have an 84 D50, 2.0 4 speed. I bought it not running and just pulled the valve cover. The head is very obviously newer than the motor/truck. I've worked on these before and I've seen both operable valve jets, and I've seen the plugs in place of the Jets. On this one, it has neither, and the cam rocker doesn't even have the extension you see coming off to run the valve jets. Has anyone experienced this before?
Sorry if some of my terminology is off, amature mechanic here.

My guess is it might well be a 2.4 head or some similar swap. How interesting.

I've never seen an 82-86 2.0 without the valve jets, am I completely wrong?
My 86 2.0L had them MCA jet valves, 1st Gen. After cracking heads several times I finally got another head without them and have been golden ever since. If you have the valves still in place without them being in use, it be best to remove them and install the kit. I hate to think that the springs on the jet valves are the only things holding the seal in the combustion chamber. It is obvious someone has done head work because they don't come from the factory that way.
I also think Roy wasn't dogging you as you may think. Roy is not that way, as long as he has a donut in the morning. You maybe need to take a look at your screen name since it does kind of seem degrading yourself. Maybe change it to CarbonferBrains or better yet...BrainsferBrains, just saying. No hard feelings...:)

a picture would be very helpful. they did make 2.0 heads with no valves, so they do exist.
Haha thanks for the info Brad. And yeah, I'll get some pictures up. The bypass plugs haven't been installed, the head is simply made without the jet valves, to my pleasant surprise.

My G63B is a non-jet valve head. It appears that the MCA-JET valves were not a mandatory introduction to Mitsubishi engines sold here in Australia. I am having a hard time finding one that isn't hydraulic though!
Yeah I'm sorry, starting to get a better feel for the community, wasn't intending to be sensative. And the more I read the more I agree with you, the variance is astonishing on these trucks. Very fun though.

There's the pictures of the head with the valve cover off. Simply no jet valves.
I'm no expert, but I think that's a 2.6, not a 2.0. I only say that because of the timing chain instead of a belt.
Whatever it is, it sure is clean!
yup yup that is deff from the astron family. either 2.0 or 2.6 not my engine flavor thou
2nd that being an astron motor, so a non jet head is definately available for it. And from the looks of the fitting on the front of the head, it is a 79 - 82 setup, possibly a caravan head which were non jet valve heads.

Haha I couldn't tell you. Like I said, amature mechanic here. It's definately a 2.0, but not the stock head. That's about as far as I've gotten for sure. I was just pleasantly surprised to not see jet valves so thought I'd pick your guys' brains.
There should be a metal tag on the left side of the firewall, and information about your truck is on it. Though the engine might have been switched out, it will reveal what engine originally came with the truck. Copy the eninge number down and post it: we can go from there.
The engine block also has a stamp marking the engine. It is on the passenger side close to the oil filter on the flat close by. The identification is between a 1/4in to 1/2in sized font so it's not real small. It may be faint though. The stamping wasn't hammered hard at factory, just a subtle placement.
Here is a 2.6 G54B and it sure looks like that is what you have. There is obvious items that show this and one is the oil filter placement and that chain for the timing. Mitsubishi didn't throw chains on hardly any motors. One was the G54B and is identical to yours. Click image below to expand.

Hey that's some good info, thanks guys. I'm in North Dakota working and the truck is back home in Idaho so when I home I'll check into it. Based on that diagram, I'd have to agree that my motor looks like a 2.6l. I do remember seeing the oil filter below the exhaust mani on the passenger side, as depicted.

Still kind of a head question, I found a header on ebay and it says it fits both the 2.0 and the 2.6. Do both heads really mount the same exhaust manifold?
Also, how big of a difference does a good header really make on these trucks? Did the stock manifold have good enough air flow?
the only motors that pacesetter header fits is the g54b 2.6 and g52b 2.0 - NOT THE g63b 2.0. you either need the dg header on here or get one from austrailia and fix it to fit the US truck. It does make a difference, for one thing it gets ridof the cat in the manifold and allows for a free flow cat if you need to run one. There is a post on here where to get the transdapt adaptor.
I still don't know which motor I have. I'll have to look. Yeahbi was looking at a pacesetter on Ebay.

the 2.6 pacesetter is a even port header, the g63b is a paired port header
I don't even know the difference between the g63b and the other ones. Pretty sure I have the 2.6 from the early 80s, whichever that is. The pacesetter I was looking at didn't have a model number or anything with it, just says it's for the 2.0 OR the 2.6. It's like $250 and I'm just trying to find out if it's worth it.
too much for that - usually around 160 to 180 unless it was the ceramic coated one, then that is about right. To me it's not worth that and I have one on Geronimo - about to replace it with the Doug Thorley tri-y header when I do the head gasket. I have about 27 years on mine, but its about gone now, so time to replace.
What did you pay for your Doug Thorley tri-y header? Do you have the link on here to the thread where you're buying them? I'll happily pay $160-180 for a header that's going to make a difference. I've got limited options for performance so gotta take what I can get
they are no longer available new unless you find someone that has one unused. The company won't make them either, even though they have the jigs to do so. The DG header on here is an improved version of this header, but is more expensive and built better.
I had re-occurring issues witg my 89 2.6 so i took my rocker assembly apart and cut the arms off that reach over to the jet valves. Too much of a pain to get my hands on the elimination kit
I got my Doug Throughly header back in the day for around 300 bones. We have the even port available. But I need to drag a D50 up to have a paired port made and a jig from that so we can have them. But on a good note DG Headers is getting a mandrel CNC bender so soon the header pipes can be all one run to the collector. You can see his work in the for sale area in the sticky area.
Can I send a paired port head for you to use or do you need the actual truck?
So far as I know, the eliminator kit did nothing for those arms. It was just a set of bolts with o rings to seal the head after removing the jet valves.

I think he needs the truck Noah, so he can create the header to fit correctly under the floor board and also not scrape on the ground. It's got to fit the vehicle and the engine, just not the engine. That's just IMO. :)Quote:

Yeah the paired port headers from Australia are deff for a car and not a truck. They turn right into the firewall. I cut the 2-1 connector off mine and plan to weld on a duel port flange and run true twice pipes
Hey Guys, I finally got the engine information. The tag on the firewall says g63b. This motor is definately not the 2.0 that I thought it was. Is the g63b a 2.6 or a 2.0? Cant find an engine stamp so trying to find out if this is a stock motor or not.

The G63B and 4g63 are always 2.0, I think the 2.0L means something, but not sure. :shrug:

Pulled the timing cover today. Was very surprised to see multiple timing chains on a 4 cyl motor. What is this thing! ?!
@Brad. I'm a decent mechanic. Just new to these trucks and motors. Mechanically inclined but not knowledgable I guess is the best way to describe it.
Shortly after posting those pictures I began disassembling the timing chain and realized that front chain is wrapped around the balance shafts. I remember reading about them, I guess it makes sense that they'd be timed with the motor.
What I'm wondering is how to re-time them during reassembly. I don't see any tdc marks or anything like I normally do on a crank pulley or cam sprocket.
I'm fairly sure based on those pictures posted on the front page of this thread by Brad (thank you by the way) that this is definitely the g54b motor, the 2.6. Sucks and means I've gotta return some parts I bought. I'm wondering if these trucks were built any differently to accommodate either the 2.0 or the 2.6? Am I going to have any problems with parts or performance having a motor that wasn't stock?
There are videos online in Youtube to help also. Just make a search in spare time. I hate to just call you Shit for a short name, seems awfully wrong. Anyway, if your taking apart, Put everything separate and numbered to it's proper home. Keep the place clean you know the routine. These are basic motors and youll do fine. 2.6 is ok, at one time it was the biggest 4 cylinder in production. You'll see identification on the block, like G54B, on the passenger side. 2.6 motors just don't like overheating is all. Hope you have a manual also. Follow it. Document and just relax, if it don't go back together, just think of the money in parts you'll have when you sell them. Probably put a new clutch in also huh? Wonder what else you will find that you didn't think you'd need...it will come.
Pull the motor out also. Stop bending over and make it easy on yourself. Get an engine stand

be glad you have the 2.6 - it has a lot more support for upgrades than the g63b 2.0. In the manual section there is books on how to time the silent shafts with the rest of the motor - its not that tough with the motor out of the truck, but it can be done it the truck with the timing cover off.
