can anyone tell me what high way driving would be like with the montero 4.65 gears with 33's? im guess my top speed wouldnt be very high
Yes I would also like to know. Though I only run 32x11.50s. And if you don't get an answer within the next week I will let you know because I plan on buying a set in two days at a local pick n pull and installing them asap
what are you getting the gears out of?
what size tires you running now? and what engine?
Well I found a 84 montero with 4.625 front and rear with a LSD in the rear. It should fit.....so I've been told
Well I am running 32x11.50-15 and I have the 2.6 with 3.909 gears now
hows the stock gears with the 32s? and i want to find out which gears will fit in my 89 with the 2.6
Well honestly its a little doggy with the 32s hints buying the 4.625s and because a new clutch runs about 150$ and the gears are only $200 plus the time it takes me to install them.....if you get my drift
i see. ive been searching to see what year montero gears i can put in mine. nothings coming up for me tho lol
Yep and you won't be able to fine anything because the gear ratio is different then what they came with stock so they say they won't work with our trucks. Does that make since to you? Its kind of hard to explane. Hey can you see the pics on my album? I wanna know if they show up
so i wont be able to tell if they until i buy them and try to bolt them up lol. and yes i can nice truck you got there. did u build that bumper or buy it?
Well to be honest I know more about the Gen 1 d50s. But I will do some research and see if I can find out what gears will fit but I think as longer as you have the 2.6 motor then anything that will fit my truck will fit yours as far as gears go. And no I wish I could say I built that bumper but I took some measurements and bought a bumper for a jeep wrangler and it has the same with frontend and the mounts are about the same with apart so I fabed up some mounts and welded them to the frame and then bolted it up
well looks like il be buying a wrangler bumper  and do u know if theres any modifications needed to swap the gears?
The bumpers are on eBay for only $300 and I dont know if there are any mods because I haven't done mine yet but plan on doing it some time next week. But there should not be any mods. Also keep your eye out for a gutter mount basket rack that will fit out trucks. On a side note I just got done bolting my freshly painted cut out fenders on and I will be posting a pic soon on my album so be sure to check it out and I'll take a pic of the way I mounted my bumper so you can see
ok thanks alot man il be sure to keep an eye out for the rack. and let me know how the gear swap went
The 1st and 2nd gen trucks are the same axles and the 84 montero gears will fit also - all the same. If you want lsd for the front, get an lsd from a 87-89 starquest and mount the gears on that carrier.
This is why I am glad I am part of this web site just for topics like this. I want you to prove me wrong but I beloved that the conquest and starion came with 3.54 gears. So they might have a lsd but the ratio would be wrong...right?
correct - just swap out the ring and pinion gears - same bolt pattern with the 4.625s
this site is great. thanks guys il be looking for ANY montero with 4.65 gears and swapping them out. any clue on how they will do down the highway with 32's?
they should put your rpms back near the same as stock gears and tires.
thats awesome. thanks
Good news I just picked up my gears about 20 min ago 4.625 front third member and 4.625 rear third member with a rear LSD all for only $250 from j and w auto wreckers in Sacramento California. Actually antelope Cali. And they even pulled the parts for me while I was at work. They actually have quite a few d50s and even a couple with the d55 diesel motor. But I'll post back when parts are installed and let u know how they work with my 32s
thats awesome man let me know! what year did u get them out of? take her down the road for me :) tell me how she rolls
They came out of an 84. And yea I'll let you know how they run
alrighty man cant wait. excite FOR you
Hey just on an off topic does anyone know of and different seats that will match the bolt holes in our trucks. I really like the spring seat in the monteros they remind me of like an air ride seat or something
i was looking at some seat posts. they all seem like they all need a little modification.
I have a set out of a 95 isuzu rodeo that supposedly bolt right up to our existing holes, and when I finally get em installed ill let you all know
OK cool thanks. Next I would need to know if our bolt pattern would be the same between an 82 and a 9
According to everybody I talk to, and i confer, if you look under the carpet you will see that our trucks are pre-drilled from the factory for buckets
Well I have buckets in mine from the factory. I just like the cushy air ride feeling seats that are in the monteros and thought they would be awesome when up in the mountains
i have a split bench. with a nice rip on the corner of the driver side. somethings gonna have to be done with that. so soon il be looking for replacements
gotta get me some buckets
I just need for all of the weather to break so I can get them installed:P
hop to it :))
They will be installed this weekend one way or the other:))
cant wait
Me either because Im tired of my bench
OK for everybody wondering. Last night I finally did the gear swap in my truck, I started out with 32 tires and 3.909 gears witch robed a lot of power from my rebuilt 2.6. So I went to the junk yard and found a 1984 montero with a LSD and 4.265 gears and installed them last night. And wow what a difference it made. I was hoping for a little difference and got a lot, it actually put my speedometer back to factory according to my GPS its only 1 MPH difference at 65 MPH and at 75 it runs right around 3200 rpm highly recomended. Oh yea and not to mention I can actually just crawl in 4 low. Hands down must have if going with bigger tires
More dang snow this weekend,= no buckets again:shakehead::thumbdown:
Glad it worked out so well for you. I'm hoping to find the gears and do the swap too this month. Just curious if you are still happy with the new gearing? Have you noticed any change in fuel economy?
Thanks
