It is a pick up screen. All this does is stop the bigger chunks of garbage floating in your tank from being pulled into the lines. I've seen a few of them in older 70's Chrysler/Mitsubishi cars but never seen one that has ended up looking that bad. This should be the part or at least get you looking in the right direction -

Awesome Geezer! thank you Man!.... First time ever uploading a picture like a big boy and it paid off! Any input on tank cleaning??? .... I picked up two cans of parts degreaser and agitate with a handful of nuts and bolts!!! Sound like a plan???
Don't use anything abrasive like nuts and bolts as it'll scratch up the inside of the tank - this will allow rust to propagate in the scratches. You'll have to flush the bottom of the tank and drain it a few times until you have gotten as much out as you can. Swirl the tank around to agitate the stuff on the bottom to move it.
There are kits out there to coat gas tanks that come with a cleaner to prep the tank, or you could use acetone or lacquer thinner if you pull the sending unit first. Or any radiator shop can boil them clean.
I've also got to do my sending unit. But not sure if I'll even be able to get the bolts out. I had a pretty hard time getting the bolts out of the tank. I'm sure the ones on the sending unit will be worse. Since the bolts are so small.
Need to replace the plate on the top of my fuel tank. Any body have a part number for it? Or how everything connects underneath it. Thank you!
I need to replace the plate on top of my gas tank. But I can't find it anywhere. Anybody have a part number or anything. It's leaking on the lines coming directly out of it. And the fuel pump is fine. Thanks.
